The James Bond franchise is entering a new phase after more than 60 years, 25 films, and over $7 billion in global box office. Following the 2021 release of No Time to Die, the long-running series paused as Amazon MGM Studios took control and began reshaping the future of the iconic spy.
The studio has tapped Denis Villeneuve, known for Dune and Blade Runner 2049, to direct the 26th official Bond film. Writer Steven Knight, best known for creating Peaky Blinders, is developing the script. Together, they are building what insiders describe as a full reset of the character and story.
Daniel Craig’s final outing in No Time to Die closed the door on his version of 007 in probably the worst way possible. Now, producers are starting fresh. Knight has hinted at a new take on Bond that is “better, stronger, and bolder,” while signaling a shift toward a younger actor who can carry the role across multiple films.
Industry reports suggest the next film may explore Bond before he earns his “Double-O” status. That idea gained traction after Knight revealed he has been consulting with members of the British Special Air Service and other intelligence professionals to ground the story in real-world experience.
“I am talking to them about what they do every day. It’s all real,” Knight told Screen Daily. He pointed to author Ian Fleming’s wartime background as a key influence, noting that Fleming understood the realities of intelligence work and combat.
Knight also emphasized the durability of the character, even as creative teams take risks. “Bond has been bulletproof,” he said. “The core of it is like a diamond. You can’t touch it.”
The casting process remains one of the most closely watched developments in Hollywood. Idris Elba, long rumored for the role, recently dismissed speculation while speaking to People at a premiere for Masters of the Universe. “They’re going younger,” Elba said. “ I wish them all the luck in the world. I can’t wait — it’s going to be amazing. I wasn’t in the race in the first place.”
Amazon MGM Studios appears committed to that direction. Auditions are now underway, with veteran casting director Nina Gold leading the search. Early reports indicate at least one younger actor has already tested for the role, though no official announcements have been made.
The studio’s push to relaunch Bond comes at a time when legacy franchises are facing pressure to stay relevant with younger audiences. With development accelerating and casting in motion, Bond 26 is shaping up as a major test of whether one of cinema’s oldest brands can successfully reinvent itself for a new era.
