Fans finally get their first glimpse at the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer will entail, and her story sounds like everything fans have been begging to see.
Dynamite Entertainment has officially unveiled the first look for the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, and the next iteration of the character is already shaping up to be pitch-perfect. The new series, written by Kelly Thompson, who also serves as the architect of the latest Buffyverse, and illustrated by David Nakayama, will reintroduce Sunnydale with not just an original story, but one of the biggest events the franchise has ever seen.
"It's been a hard book to talk about," Thompson told Bleeding Cool. "The new way I've decided to try to talk about it, while hiding the mysterious interior, is telling people to think of the first issues like an event book. Almost like we're starting with an event book with something that draws the cast of Buffy and Angel together for like a very personal emotional thing, and then we sort of spin out from there."
What Is the Next Buffy the Vampire Slayer All About?
The upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer series from Dynamite Entertainment was announced back in July 2025. It was previously noted that the series is explicitly not a rebooted origin story, nor does it simply pick up with the same characters in their adult lives. "You don't need to have ever read any of the other previous Buffy comics to understand this book. And we've made it as reader-friendly as possible in case you aren't already a fan of the show," Thompson explained.
Dynamite Entertainment Editor Nate Cosby said of the next Buffy series, "There was one name on my wish list of writers for Buffy: Kelly Thompson. There was one name on my wish list of writers for Angel: Kelly Thompson. Her passion for these characters is second-to-none. The interweaving story she's crafted for both books is going to knock everyone's socks off."
Since the premiere of the beloved 1997 TV show, which itself was adapted from the 1992 film of the same name, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise has expanded in a myriad of directions across nearly every medium. Apart from classic spin-offs such as Angel or Fray and follow-up comics, the Buffyverse as a whole has been reimagined multiple times by publishers such as BOOM! Studios.
Unfortunately, it seems as though the realm of comics is the only place that fans will be seeing the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer anytime soon. After months of hype, Hulu's hotly anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival was canceled by the streaming giant. The news was met with widespread disappointment from fans and stars of the series alike, while mixed reports over why the revival was shelved have only fueled further criticism, particularly regarding Hulu leadership, such as head of original Craig Erwich, who was reportedly largely responsible for the cancellation.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer from Dynamite Entertainment is expected to arrive sometime later in 2026.
