This story starts with Bucky Barnes–now Captain America–taking on Baron Zemo and some of the other nemeses from the current storyline all while looking back (with meloncholy) at birthdays of the past.
But then Ed Brubaker reminds us that he can actually write something that’s not dark…
It’s Winter Soldier’s birthday!
There are two other short stories in this issue. One is a beautifully illustrated recap of the past 50 issue of Captain America and the other is by Fred Hembeck.
A little lightness, a set-up/jump-on point for the next really big arc to come, and some humor. In all, a pleasurable 50th issue.
This is the “last” issue of this book, as the next one will return to original numbering (#600), but it also counts towards those 600 issues so it’s not really the end.
