Last time we left our heroes protagonists, they were in the middle of recruiting for their heist. And we get a delightful bunch of characters that rarely get the spotlight as well as one new addition to the DC Universe. So, what does this issue bring?
At this rate, I’m going to run out of adjectives to praise this series
Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League might be one of the best series I’ve read this year so far from DC, comparable only with Batman: Dark Patterns. And even that series is taking place in the not-so-fertile ground of “the early days of Batman.”
But this series has a lot to offer. For starters, it uses a wide range of characters from different walks of DC history, from a character who made their debut in the 70s to a character that made her first appearance in this series. And the former seems to have a crush on the latter, so let’s see how that plays out.
Anyway, now that the “why” and “who” has been dealt with, it’s time for the “how.” Remember those Justice League membership cards that each hero received in the DC All In Special? The plan is to steal one of those from one of the more…gullible members of the team. Still, this won’t be an easy task. I mean, it’s not like there’s a hero who constantly livestreams his location, what he’s doing, lacks situational awareness, aaaaand it’s Sideways.
Justice League Unlimited…Access Granted To Everyone
If you have been reading my reviews of Justice League Unlimited you may have seen a recurring complaint from me regarding the vast roster that put every hero with a pulse on the team. And it seems like I’m not the only one as every book I glance at in this era seems to have an issue with this. However, Greg Rucka goes out of his way to point out the absurdity of the situation by showing that just because someone is a hero – and yes, despite his flaws, Sideways is unambiguously heroic – that doesn’t mean they are ready to take on the responsibility of what being in the League means. He’s very naive and is thus easily tricked into getting his League card stolen by Featherweight and Lian. Now, could someone like Sideways be deserving of a spot in the League? Yeah, eventually. Should he be in the League right now? No, no, and no.
Now this review may make you seem like not much happens in this issue. But, as I have said before, this is a dialogue heavy book focused on characterization. Seeing Klarion trying to flirt with a girl, seeing the whole group plot the heist, and seeing a reminder as to why Cheetah is so willing to do this is part of the fun of this book.
Recommended If
- You want to support one of the best series released this year.
- You like seeing C-level characters getting to do stuff.
- You enjoy a plot driven by characterisation over action.
Overall
Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League #3 continues to maintain the high standard this series has set for itself. We get to see the other players besides Barbara Ann and Jade interact and it’s great. With the planning stage complete, expect to see the plan put into action over the remainder of the series.
Score: 9/10
