Universal Monsters is gearing up for a terrifying Halloween season. Michael Walsh's Frankenstein series is getting remastered in a new, beautiful black-and-white edition.
AIPT shared the news of Skybound Entertainment's upcoming special edition, which will hit stores this October as a two-issue limited series. The original Universal Monsters: Frankenstein run was released as a four-issue miniseries, and the new release combines the full story into two oversized issues as well as giving them the cinematic black-and-white treatment befitting the Universal Monsters franchise. The story explores a previously untold chapter connected to the classic piece of cinema.
Skybound & Universal Re-Release Michael Walsh's Frankenstein This October

Universal Monsters: Frankenstein tells the story of Dr. Henry Frankenstein as he begins to craft his infamous creation — starting with robbing the grave of a decorated police officer in search of the perfect pair of hands for his creature. As a result, a grieving son sets out on a search for answers...and Frankenstein and his monster are in his crosshairs.
The series is written and illustrated by Walsh, known for his work on Exquisite Corpses. Skybound's Assistant Editor Caitlin Chappell talked about how the upcoming new release offers readers the perfect way to experience the story.
"Frankenstein is one of those stories that transcends time and cements itself as one of the most iconic and influential monster stories in the horror genre," Chappell said in a press release. "Universal Monsters and Walsh are a dynamic collaboration that do this beloved monster justice, and we're excited to give fans a classic double feature with Universal Monsters: Frankenstein Black and White Special Issue #1, which collects the original first and second issues in one book."
In addition to the announcement of the reprinting, Skybound also shared a series of special covers for the Black & White Special's issues. Each issue will receive two covers, with all four spotlighting Frankenstein's monster and drawn with limited colors fitting the new release.
Walsh's Frankenstein story is one part of Skybound's ongoing Universal Monsters lineup. Previous releases have included James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds' Dracula, which retold the iconic vampire's ill-fated story. Dan Watters, Ram V, and Matthew Roberts united for Creature From the Black Lagoon Lives!, which expanded from the classic film's story. More recent releases include The Invisible Man, Phantom of the Opera, and the currently ongoing Blood of the Wolfman.
