“Devil-Wings Over Shadizar”
Why does the towering Minaret stand open to the sky? This is one of many questions Conan had as he raced through the darkened streets of Shadizar. The men in red robes had abducted his new friend Jenna for some nefarious purpose. Their cult seemed to be feared across the city. Even the girl’s uncle refused to help save her. The life of a tavern socialite seemed destined to rest upon Conan’s shoulders.
Later in the evening, the Cimmerian peered across the street from a darkened alleyway. The tower temple was large with many steps leading up towards arched doorways. This was no palace for certain, but generations of wealthy patrons had emptied their coffers to erect such an edifice. How was Conan to enter such a compound without raising the alarm? A plan began to form in his mind as a man dressed in red robes hurried past the Barbarian’s hiding spot. Mitra has provided Conan with a disguise. It would be up to him to take it.
Is the city of Shadizar even too dangerous for the likes of Conan the Barbarian? Will Jenna survive the Night-Cult and their sinister deity? Who will survive in the dark high above a city of the wicked? Collect the series to find out!
Review
Is it god or beast who stalks the nighttime skies over Zamora? Robert E Howard had a unique element within his stories. Howard’s antagonists could be either supernatural in nature, or the last remains of animal species going extinct? Or, maybe a combination of both.
Dinosaurs, Gigantopithecus-inspired apes, even ancient insects have found their way into Howard’s writings. Anything and everything is possible. In my opinion, this is one of the reasons why generations of new readers continue to flock to Conan and his world of Hyborian. For the Night-God, I give Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith four out of five stars. Squeak to your god, Zamorians! SQUEAK!
