Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

The upcoming Super Creepshow Special #1 promises to be much different from previous issues of the series.

With the 2025 Halloween season finally here, now is the perfect time for lovers of all things spooky to celebrate by watching some of cinema's most sinister classics. Then again, there may be some comic book fans who prefer scary stories told in an illustrated form. Luckily, horror fans can receive the best of both worlds with the latest edition of the darkly humorous Creepshow comic book series.

The original series spun off from the 1982 classic horror anthology film directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King. This special edition will not only please those who crave all things creepy, but also fans of what the medium is more traditionally known for: superheroes.

Super Creepshow Special #1 has acquired an impressive collection of acclaimed comic book writers and artists to introduce a trilogy of scary stories about the kind of people who wear capes. Featuring art that recreates the cover of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns but with The Creep in Batman's place, the issue boasts tales that appear to take inspiration from classic origin stories and famous comic book arcs, but with a few devilish twists.

The first story comes from writer Dan Watters of Batman: Dark Patterns and Destro fame and Absolute Superman artist Carmine Di Giandomenico and involves a recently deceased, powerful crimefighter being laid to rest, only to be resurrected, but not quite as himself. This plot calls to mind the game-changing story of The Death of Superman, much like how Ed Brisson and Andrei Bressan's tale about a special serum given to the wrong person sounds like an alternate take on Captain America if Steve Rogers was not such a golden boy after all.

The second story, by description alone, draws comparisons to the origins of DC's Deadman. Written by X-Men's Ryan Stegman and illustrated by The Moon is Following Us co-creator Riley Rossmo, it follows a superhero named the Grave Ghost, who is tasked with solving his own murder.

The Creepshow Comic Has Served Up Scares For Years

The Creepshow comic book series has been published by Image Comics since 2023. It actually takes direct inspiration from the Shudder original anthology TV show based on the cinematic favorite, which was made as a tribute to frightening comics of the 1950s, such as Vault of Horror and the original Tales from the Crypt. So, in other words, this new series is a comic book adapted from a TV show that is spun off from a movie that is inspired by comic books. Talk about coming full circle.

Image just put out the first issue of Creepshow Vol. 4 in Sept. 2025. The ghoulish release presented a double feature of demented tales from more renowned comic book creators, such as Green Lantern: Fracture Spectrum scribe Jeremy Adams and 100 Bullets illustrator Eduardo Risso, who craft a love story of sorts with a thematic "eat the rich" twist. The second half of the issue from Rosie Knight and Oliver Ono, the duo behind IDW's Godzilla: Monster Island Summer Camp, entails a writer whose secluded rental home comes with a bizarre and enticing rule to never go into the smaller house on the property.

The next regular issue of Creepshow, the second of five planned for Vol. 4, is coming out later in October, giving readers the chance to indulge in more chills and thrills closer to All Hallows' Eve. The third and fourth issues have release dates set for November and December, respectively.

Super Creepshow Special hits shelves and digital platforms on Oct. 8, 2025.
