DC Studios is moving forward with its next major TV project as Lanterns heads toward an August release on HBO Max, marking the franchise’s first live action Green Lantern story since the failed 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds.
The new series is part of DC’s Chapter 1 slate, titled Gods and Monsters, and takes a darker approach with a TV-MA rating. The story centers on a string of murders on Earth, shifting the focus away from cosmic spectacle and into a grounded crime setting that echoes the tone of True Detective.
A second official trailer dropped on May 18, offering a clearer look at the dynamic between John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, and Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. The footage leans into their tension as Jordan trains Stewart while also clashing with him over how to use the power of the Green Lantern ring.
Jordan explains the ring’s abilities in a casual moment at a bar, even using it to create a dollar bill, signaling both the scope and the unpredictability of its power. Stewart pushes back, questioning whether Jordan truly earned the ring or was simply chosen, a line that points to deeper conflict tied to responsibility and merit.

The trailer also gives fans their first partial look at Jordan in his Green Lantern suit. The design remains mostly hidden in shadow, though the recognizable Lantern Corps emblem is visible on his chest. The footage suggests DC is holding back full reveals to build anticipation closer to release.
Nathan Fillion appears briefly as Guy Gardner, continuing his role after appearances in Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. His scene outside a prison cell hints at a wider DC Universe connection, something the studio has emphasized as it tries to rebuild audience trust after years of uneven results.
Stewart’s powers are also on display for the first time, with scenes showing him flying over traffic and testing the limits of his abilities. He makes it clear he intends to surpass Jordan, reinforcing the rivalry that appears central to the series. So far viewers have expressed concern about John Stewart’s disdain for Hal Jordan, as demonstrated in the trailer, making it a downer for many. This trailer was clearly a response to the previous trailer which emphasized the bossy, female sheriff, and downplayed the superpowers aspects of the show.
The new trailer arrives after an earlier preview in March that was partially leaked before its official release. That first look focused more on tone than action, while the latest footage shifts toward showcasing the superhero elements fans expect.
With roughly three months until release, DC Studios is increasing its marketing push as it attempts to revive one of its most troubled properties. The original Green Lantern film became a symbol of past missteps, and Lanterns now carries the weight of proving the brand can succeed in a more grounded, character driven format.
Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO Max on Aug. 16, 2026.
