DC’s Newest Absolute Hero Might Be Just What the Universe Truly Needs

John Dodge has been an avid consumer of comic books and nerd culture for as long as he can remember. An expert on obscure productions from the '80s and '90s, John has too many opinions about Beetleborgs for someone with an active social life.

The following contains major spoilers for Absolute Evil #1, on sale October 1 from DC Comics.

The Absolute Green Arrow has finally arrived, and he might be the only hero in the entire Absolute Universe who truly resembles their former self.

In a preview for Absolute Evil #1 (by Al Ewing, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Tom Napolitano), readers are introduced to the Absolute Universe's Oliver Queen. Rather than being a dour and depressing or grim and gritty version of the character as so many other inhabitants of the Absolute Universe have been before him, however, this Green Arrow is every bit the freedom-fighting vigilante his predecessor was. Better yet, he is just as willing to put his life on the line if it means bringing down the villains who rule his world.

Oliver Queen, better known as the Green Arrow, is one of the DC Universe's oldest and most beloved heroes. Created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp, the Golden Age iteration of the character made his debut all the way back in 1941 in the story "Case of the Namesake Murders" from the pages of More Fun Comics #73. While the original Oliver Queen was a renowned historian, subsequent versions have expanded the character to be a fierce social activist and a begrudging titan of industry alike.

Absolute Evil #1 marks a major turning point for the Absolute Universe, as its premier villains join forces for the very first time to confront the superpowered heroes who have emerged over the past year. Apart from the major villains of the Absolute Universe, DC Comics previously noted that Absolute Evil #1 will feature "the introduction of not one but two major Absolute characters who will change the course of the Absolute Universe in its second year, and is unmissable for all fans of this red-hot publishing line!"

The official solicit synopsis for Absolute Evil #1 reads, "Without heroes... without protection... without restraint... there is only ABSOLUTE EVIL. The emergence of superheroes has caught the attention of the world... and it’s certainly caught the attention of the people who run it. Ra’s al Ghul, Veronica Cale, Elenore Thawne, Hector Hammond, and the mysterious Joker have worked at cross-purposes until now, but this growing threat requires new ways of thinking... and new partnerships. An insidious betrayal from within their ranks is imminent, and if they don’t take action, they’ll lose control of a planet that was built to be their playground!"

Absolute Evil #1 goes on sale October 1 from DC Comics.

The Justice League, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter, pose together on the Justice League of America Vol. 1 comic cover.
