15 Best Law & Order Characters, Ranked
Law & Order was a game-changing procedural and one of the longest-running television shows. But with so many seasons, who were the best characters?
First aired in 1990, Law & Order is considered a modern staple of both the police procedural and legal drama genres. Created by Dick Wolf and originally starring George Dzundza, Chris Noth, Dann Florek, Michael Moriarty, Richard Brooks, and Steven Hill, Law & Order follows the detectives of the New York City Police Department as they carry out investigations that are later taken to court by the prosecutors of the Manhattan Distrist Attorney's office. These stories usually take place across two distinct parts, and are frequently marketed as being "ripped from the headlines" of recent real life news stories.
The Law & Order Franchise Continues to Grow
In the years since its debut, Law & Order has run for an ongoing 24 seasons, the latest of which began on October 3. The series has also led to a whole host of spinoffs including the fan-favorite Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, as well as Law & Order: Trial by Jury, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Law & Order: Organized Crime, and Law & Order True Crime. The franchise has also received multiple overseas spinoffs, including the London-based Law & Order: UK, and the most recent addition to the franchise, Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent, which premiered on Citytv on February 22.

Law & Order Breaking This Trend Ruins What Made SVU Great in the First Place
A departure from cold opens has changed one of the most integral parts of the Law & Order franchise.
In September, longtime Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay opened up about the impact of heading up a series that frequently revolves around such dark, often outright disturbing stories. "When I started the show, I wasn't aware of how deeply it would go into me. My husband Peter is always like, anytime I go anywhere, my first question is, 'What’s the crime rate here?' So it's on the brain," Hargitay said at the time. "There's been times when I didn't know how to protect myself, and I think I was definitely a victim of secondary trauma from being inundated with these stories and knowing that they were true. Those were the parts that I didn't know how to metabolize, just because of the sheer volume of it."
Since her debut on the series, Hargitay has made great efforts to support those affected by similar stories of violence and abuse through her Joyful Heart Foundation.
Law & Order Seasons 1-20 will be available for streaming on Hulu beginning December 1.
