Dynamite is continuing its great success in doing comic book tie-ins based on Disney classics, and its latest Disney comic book series will be a new The Lion King series. One of Dynamite's top cover artists, Edwin Galmon (who did the main cover for the recent Stitch comic book series that Dynamite launched), will be making his debut as a writer/artist on this new series.

The comic book series will feature new adventures that take place during the events of the blockbuster 1994 Disney film (which later spawned the blockbuster 1.6 billion dollar "live action" remake in 2019), thus expanding the canon of the film to add new adventures.

When will the new series be set in the continuity of The Lion King?

The series will take place in the early period of the film, when Simba is still a young lion cub enjoying his life on the Pride Lands, while learning how to become his father's successor as the king of the Pride Lands. Mufasa will have to deal with various challenges, as well. The life of a Lion King is certainly not without its stresses, and we will see issues where Mufasa will have to defend his home, while also teaching his son life lessons.

There will be new characters introduced in the series, but we will also see some classic characters from the film make appearances, as well. One of the very first Dynamite Disney comic book series was a spotlight on the villainous Scar, so we'll surely see some of his plotting in the time before he made his fateful coup against Mufasa.

What does Edwin Galmon have to say about the Lion King project?

In a Dynamite press release, Galmon noted about the project,"Having the honor and opportunity to work with the regal The Lion King franchise is a humbling experience. This is where my childhood imagination meets my adulthood craftsmanship and with excitement, I hope people really enjoy the story we have cooked up!"

Galmon also explained why this book is set when during Simba's youth, "As a kid my favorite parts of The Lion King movie were all the scenes featuring Mufasa and Simba together because I related to how much I love and respect my dad. With that in mind, I wanted to have more father-son bonding, loving guidance, goofy playtimes and mentorship themes for Simba to enjoy with his dad."

Dynamite suggests that the story is best suited for a family-friendly reading experience, noting in its press release that The Lion King comic book series is "[a] touching story about a father and son, it's also enjoyable for all ages and ideal for parents sharing the story with their children."
