Elizabeth Olsen has played Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than ten years. Her first appearance came in the mid-credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014, which set up her expanded role in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Since then, she has appeared in multiple Marvel films and led her own Disney+ series WandaVision. Despite all that, her most recent return to the MCU did not leave a strong mark on her. Olsen admitted she does not even remember working on the project and could not explain anything about it.
As reported by GamesRadar, Olsen was joined by her WandaVision co-star Paul Bettany for a panel at L.A. Comic Con last weekend. During a question-and-answer session, she was asked about her role in Marvel Zombies, an animated Disney+ miniseries where she voiced a zombified version of Scarlet Witch called the Queen of the Dead. She appeared in three of the four episodes, but she bluntly told fans she recalls nothing about the show, adding that she would need to watch it herself just to jog her memory. Olsen explained:
“I truly recorded that years ago. I can’t remember anything. I need to watch it. I have no idea what [happens in] Marvel Zombies. I filmed it. It’s my voice. I did it in my house. I wasn’t even in an office space. This must have been 2020, 2021? Why was I working in my house and not in a studio? I really have no idea what it was like. I’m so sorry.”
Marvel Zombies is a spin-off of What If…? and premiered on Disney+ on September 24 as part of Phase Six of the MCU. The show quickly reached the top of the global streaming chart, surpassing Alien: Earth, High Potential, and Tempest. The series remains in the top spot after nearly a week, suggesting there is strong audience interest. It takes place in an alternate timeline where a zombie outbreak consumes much of Earth, forcing both heroes and villains into horrific battles with a violent conclusion.
Olsen’s last live-action appearance was in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where her character seemingly ended her journey in a final act of sacrifice at Mount Wundagore. Even so, alternate timelines create opportunities for Marvel to bring her back, though nothing is confirmed. Olsen has already said she has no involvement in the upcoming films Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars, scheduled for release in December 2026 and December 2027.
Whether she will return in another animated role remains uncertain. Marvel Zombies was promoted as a limited event, but the ending of the final episode left the story open. Marvel Television executive Brad Winderbaum and series creator Bryan Andrews told Variety there is “so much material” for a possible second season, provided there is enough demand. While Disney has not shared detailed viewership numbers, the show’s early dominance on the streaming chart points to continuing interest. That number could grow further if Olsen decides to watch her own performance for the first time.
