Godzilla Officially Set to Invade San Diego Comic-Con

IDW Publishing is about to unleash Godzilla upon San Diego Comic-Con, and there is no telling how far his impact will reach.

Fan-favorite indie publisher IDW has officially unveiled the next entirely unexpected yet eagerly anticipated Godzilla one-shot — Godzilla vs. America: San Diego. The main story for the upcoming issue will be written and illustrated by the legendary Stan Sakai, and will revolve around what is sure to be one of the most disastrous industry events of all time. Godzilla vs. America: San Diego #1 will also feature stories from the likes of Greg & Fake of Santos Sisters fame.

The official solicit synopsis for Godzilla vs. America: San Diego #1 from IDW Publishing reads, "Godzilla returns to the Golden State to smash through the country’s biggest comic book convention in this oversize one-shot! What’s the biggest thing coming to Comic-Con this year? Comic book and movie announcements? Nope. Comic creators, cosplayers, and celebrities? No!"

The official solicit text continues, "Rising from the depths of San Diego Bay is the king of the monsters, ready for its destructive photo op. Move over, Hall H — This year, all eyes are on Hall G. Join Godzilla as it takes on a roster of San Diego Comic-Con all-stars. Sorry, folks, but Godzilla doesn’t wait in line."

What Else To Expect From Godzilla In Comic Book Form

Godzilla vs. America: San Diego #1 will be just the latest in a long line of epic Godzilla titles released by IDW Publishing since their Kai-Sei era of the franchise began. Speaking to CBR's John Dodge back in 2025, IDW Publishing Editor Jake Williams touched on where the mainline Kai-Sei era Godzilla title is taking the franchise, explaining that "In some ways, I like to think of this as the Ultimate Godzilla universe. We’re trying to reimagine the characters, kaiju, and ideas of the Godzilla canon in the same way the original Ultimate universe did for Marvel."

Fans are also looking forward to the release of what might just be the darkest Kai-Sei era Godzilla story to date in the form of The Horror of Godzilla by writers Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan and artist Tristan Jones. The Horror of Godzilla #1 will bring readers back to the titular kaiju's original 1954 rampage through the heart of Tokyo, marking the beginning of a four-issue limited series that will serve as a prequel to the Kai-Sei era of comics as a whole.

Williams compared The Horror of Godzilla to some of the franchise's most harrowing features, stating, "[This] is for fans of Godzilla Minus One, Shin Godzilla, and Godzilla '54. It's a terrifying look at the Kai-Sei era's first Godzilla attack. It grabs the reader and places them on the ground in the middle of the most petrifying night in human history: the arrival of Godzilla."

Godzilla vs. America: San Diego #1 from IDW Publishing goes on sale on July 22.
