‘Greyhound 2’ Starts Filming — But Will Apple Let It Hit Theaters?

1 week ago 16

Tom Hanks is back at sea. Filming has officially begun in Australia on the long-awaited sequel to his World War II hit Greyhound. After years of speculation and false starts, cameras are finally rolling on Greyhound 2, and the Oscar winner is again stepping into the captain’s shoes as Commander Krause. Hanks is joined by returning co-stars Stephen Graham of Adolescence fame and Elisabeth Shue, with newcomers including Jack Patten from Robin Hood.

Greyhound first premiered on Apple TV in 2020, right in the middle of the Covid lockdowns, and it went on to smash streaming records for the platform. The movie told the story of U.S. Navy Commander Krause, tasked with leading 37 ships across the freezing Atlantic, hunted by Nazi submarines beneath the waves. It was a tense, relentless fight for survival and one that many viewers believed deserved to be seen on the big screen. But that never happened. Hanks himself called it “an absolute heartbreak” that audiences could only see it from home.

Now, six years later, the actor is taking another shot at the cinematic experience. Hanks wrote the script himself again, while Aaron Schneider returns to direct. According to Deadline, the follow-up will carry Krause and his crew “from the beaches of Normandy to the Pacific Ocean as they help turn the tide of war.” There’s no release date yet, but reports suggest Greyhound 2 could set sail sometime in 2027.

But here’s the question everyone is asking: will Apple let audiences see this one in theaters? The first movie might have been a streaming hit, but it’s clear Hanks created it for the big screen. Does it make sense for a massive wartime epic to be confined to living rooms again? Or will Apple risk the box office to give moviegoers something real and patriotic during a time when stories of heroism feel rarer than ever?

Apple hasn’t said a word about release plans yet. That silence raises its own question about Hollywood priorities. Are streamers so addicted to view counts and subscriber boosts that even a Tom Hanks war epic can’t break free from the algorithm? For fans, and maybe for Hanks himself, this sequel represents more than another movie. It’s a shot at restoring something Hollywood used to do best—bringing courage, sacrifice, and leadership to the biggest screen possible. If Greyhound 2 finally gets that chance, it might just remind audiences what a real movie moment feels like.
