Green Lantern first appeared in All American Comics #16, which went on sale at spinning racks and newstands across America on May 21, 1940.
It was written by Bill Finger, the uncredited cocreator of Batman, and illustrated by Mart Nodell. His secret I.D. was Alan Scott, and after about a decade, he disappeared. Then, in 1959, Julius Schwartz and Gil Kane reimagined him as test pilot Hal Jordan in Showcase #22.
And then, even later, Alan Scott was brought back as Green Lantern of Earth 2.
