Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.
There are few horror franchises quite as unique as the Hellraiser movies. From the mind of Clive Barker, these tales involving a band of sadomasochistic demonic entities connected to our earthly plane through a mysterious puzzle box challenge one's distinction between pleasure and pain.
The series, like many other classic horror movie franchises, has since made the transition from the big screen to the comic book pages. It appears that Pinhead and the Cenobites are making another return to the medium with several new releases on the rise.
Hellraiser Returns With Five New One-Shot Comics
At the tail end of the summer, Boom! Studios will begin releasing a series of one-shots set in the world of Hellraiser. The five stories, each focusing on a different Cenobite, such as Chatterer and Butterball, are collectively referred to as Hellraiser: Resurrections.
The first chapter, Hellraiser: Resurrections – New Wounds #1, comes from writer Mike Costa and artist Paco Camallonga and follows an investigation into the mysterious Puzzle Box that goes hellishly wrong. That is followed by Zac Thompson and artist Gavin Mitchell’s Hellraiser: Resurrections – The Onanistic Ritual #1, which puts the Chatterer at the forefront and drops a week later on Sept. 9.

The following week, Hellraiser: Resurrections – Hell's Council #1, from writer Nero Villagallos O’Reilly and artist Francesca Ciregia, will reveal the aftermath of Butterball's downfall after the events of the 1988 sequel, Hellbound: Hellraiser II.
The final one-shot, releasing Sept. 30, Hellraiser: Resurrections – The Return of the Priest #1, sees writer Sarah Gailey and artist Alessio Avallone uncover the history of the series' iconic lead villain, Pinhead, originally known as Lead Cenobite and then played by Doug Bradley. While these 32-page comics will technically serve as standalone stories bred from the wicked world Barker introduced nearly 40 years ago, fans should consider them a pivotal read, especially if they intend to read the next official Hellraiser comic book series.
A New Hellraiser Comic Book Series Is Coming
Image via Boom! StudiosThe Hellraiser: Resurrections one-shots are more than just a new anthology of stories connected to these iconic freaky films. It will set the tone for a new ongoing series and limited series set to come out through Boom! Studios in 2027.
The publisher first began putting out its own series of comics spun off from the Hellraiser movies in 2011. The franchise was previously licensed by Epic Comics, an imprint of Marvel intended for mature audiences, from 1989 to 1994.
The saga of the Cenobites began in 1986 with a novella by Clive Barker called The Hellbound Heart, which served as the inspiration for the original 1987 film. It tells the story of a man who urges his lover to commit insidious acts to help fully restore him to life after his tampering with the puzzle box proves deadly.
Hellraiser, which Barker also wrote and directed, went on to inspire nine sequels that saw Pinhead achieve more screentime, but were also criticized for softening him and the other Cenobites into more generic villains than what the original portrayed them as. Director David Bruckner would reinterpret the original for a new audience with a Hulu-original thriller that saw Jamie Clayton take over the role of Lead Cenobite, now called "The Priest."
Hellraiser: Resurrections – New Wounds #1 is set to haunt the shelves on Sept. 2, 2026.
