Is ‘The Conjuring’ Really Ending? Last Rites Tracking Strong With Ed & Lorraine’s “Final Case”

Warner Bros. is preparing to put a close on one of its most successful horror franchises. The Conjuring: Last Rites will open nationwide on September 5 and early tracking suggests the film could debut between $35 million and $40 million. If numbers land at the higher end, it would come close to matching The Conjuring 2, which opened in 2016 with $40.4 million. The original entry still leads the series with a $41.9 million start.

Deadline reports that these figures place the fourth installment on solid footing. Its predecessor, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, faced unusual conditions when it launched in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. That entry opened at $24 million, releasing simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max due to Warner Bros.’ hybrid strategy at the time.

The box office performance of the Conjuring films has been reliable across the past decade. Together, the main series has earned $2.2 billion worldwide on a combined production budget of $208 million. This does not include the larger connected universe featuring spinoffs such as The Nun and Annabelle.

September has long been a favorable month for horror films. Warner Bros. has dominated the post-Labor Day frame before with major titles. It: Chapter One set a record during its 2017 release with $123.4 million, the biggest September opening in history. One year later, The Nun opened within the Conjuring universe and pulled in $53.8 million in its first weekend.

Marketing for The Conjuring: Last Rites emphasizes the story as the final chapter for Ed and Lorraine Warren. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return to their roles for what is billed as the Warrens’ last supernatural case. Directed by Michael Chaves from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, the film also stars Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, and John Brotherton.

Trailers have leaned into the “last case” positioning, which has drawn interest from longtime fans. With over a decade of consistent success at the box office, audiences may see Last Rites as not just another installment but also a closing chapter in one of modern cinema’s most profitable horror sagas.

The Conjuring: Last Rites opens in theaters on September 5.
