James Gunn Just Revealed the Truth About His DCU Justice League

DC Studios co-head James Gunn confirms one major fan theory about Superman's Justice Gang, even if it didn't completely hit the mark.

Per The Direct, Gunn recently opened up about Maxwell Lord's Justice Gang who made their debut in Superman starring David Corenswet and what greater role they might be playing in the DCU. When asked if the Justice Gang could be considered the beginnings of the Justice League as fans know it best, Gunn responded, "Yeah, I think you could say that. I don't know why not, but I wouldn't jump the gun with thinking that's going to happen tomorrow."

Gunn went on to note that the Justice Gang were initially formed after being inspired by Superman's exploits. He also confirmed the status of Anthony Carrigan's Metamorpho as a member of the team, clarifying that Metamorpho "joins them at the end of the movie, for sure." Gunn added, "I mean, Guy [Gardner] says he's in, so he is in. He probably has to get a rubber stamp by Maxwell Lord, but I think he'll be fine with that."

The Justice Gang serves as something of a stand-in for the Justice League, at least at this point in the DCU. Bankrolled by billionaire Maxwell Lord, portrayed by Sean Gunn, the Justice Gang made their debut in Superman as the unexpected defenders of Jarhanpur. At their outset, the Justice Gang consist of Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner aka Green Lantern, Isabela Merced's Kendra Saunders aka Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi's Michael Holt aka Mister Terrific. Over the course of the film, the Justice Gang prove instrumental in bringing down Lex Luthor and his would-be reign of terror, as well as freeing Metamorpho from Luthor's pocket universe prison. Apart from Superman, the Justice Gang have also appeared in Season 2 of Peacemaker on HBO.

Following the success of Superman, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav opened up about not just the film's impact at the box office, but on the future of the wider DCU. "Superman is just the first step. Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films Supergirl and Clayface in theaters and the series Lanterns on HBO Max, all part of a bold 10-year plan," Zaslav said at the time. "The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn't be more excited for what's ahead," Zaslav added.

While there are numerous other productions in the works at DC Studios, not every good idea is a sure thing when it comes to being greenlit. Gunn himself previously discussed "a movie that was greenlit" that ultimately ended up being shelved entirely. "We got second draft and third draft, and it just wasn't changing. It wasn't getting better. Just because we have a good director attached and a good screenwriter, it doesn't mean the script is working... Director's going to look bad, screenwriter's going to look bad and we're going to look bad. So I don't want to have this. We're not going to make the movie. And so we killed it."

Superman is avaliable to rent on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video.
