Jerry Bruckheimer, long-time producer of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, has recently confirmed that he has spoken with Johnny Depp about potentially returning as Captain Jack Sparrow for the upcoming sixth film. Despite Depp’s well-publicized fallout with Disney after 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales—following allegations made by Amber Heard and Disney subsequently severing ties—the situation appears to be evolving. Bruckheimer shared in several August 2025 interviews that Depp’s return isn’t ruled out, stating:
“If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know.”
Bruckheimer emphasized that the script, currently in the works and nearing completion by writer Jeff Nathanson, is the key factor. The producer praised Depp’s creative role in bringing Jack Sparrow to life, highlighting that the character’s essence emerged from Depp’s unique interpretation and improvisational style—something any reboot would struggle to replicate without him.
The next Pirates film is planned as a reboot, but Bruckheimer has asserted his desire for Depp to appear, at least to help “pass the baton” to a new generation of pirates and bridge the old and new eras of the franchise.

Regarding the broader cast, Orlando Bloom has publicly expressed his openness to reprising his role as Will Turner. He mentioned he’d love to reunite the original crew, injecting some optimistic energy for fans hoping to see familiar faces. However, Keira Knightley has shown little interest in returning, making her involvement less likely at this time.
In essence:
- Johnny Depp’s return depends entirely on his satisfaction with the script.
- Disney and Bruckheimer want Depp back for at least a cameo or passing-the-torch moment.
- A reboot is still moving forward—but with the possibility of bridging old and new characters.
- Orlando Bloom is game for a return, but Keira Knightley probably is not.
No final deals have been announced, and Disney has not made official confirmation, but Bruckheimer’s recent statements are the strongest hint yet that Jack Sparrow may yet sail again if all the stars—and script pages—align.
