Justice League: The Omega Act Special #1 review

This comic is pointless and you should not buy it.

Note that I said pointless, not necessarily bad. While there are plenty of things to like in this comic, especially if you are fans of a certain character who we will get more into later, this comic functionally has no reason to exist. Its predecessor Dark Tomorrow at least had a plot centered around the time-displaced characters and was unique enough to kind of justify itself.

But this…this has nothing.

Here is a spread image of all the other titles you could be reading instead…not that most of them are that much better

Well, I should get into the plot which is split into two narratives. The first focuses in the past as young Lara Lor-van and Ursa navigate some ruins on Krypton and discover the origins of Doomsday. The second is in the present and focuses on Doomsday, now the Time Trapper, as he discusses with Booster Gold about the need to convince the heroes of what they need to do.

The Lara and Ursa story is interesting but lacks tension because obviously they will be fine. They end up discovering a few things that I guess must be foreshadowing for DC K.O. and run away from some hounds that look like Doomsday. Like I said, interesting but not much to really sink your teeth into.

As for Booster and Doomsday in the present, they discuss what they need to do. And to make his point Doomsday uses his new Time Trapper powers to show the Darkseid Legion killing heroes in all possible timelines. Again, this is hollow. However, unlike the Lara and Ursa stuff this annoys me. Most of these alternate timeline heroes have not been relevant in years and as a result only show up to get jobbed by a threat to show off how dangerous they are (I realize this might be a me problem. I’m a comic nerd who cares nothing for wrestling). Seeing these characters being lined up to be knocked down is pointless. I mean, come on, is killing Kamandi supposed to sell me on the threat level of this Legion?

Still, the one shining spot is the aforementioned character, Wally West. He was able to intercept the Time Trapper before he takes Booster on his time-travel tour and joins them. And he is later the key to getting them back to safety after the Legion attacks. And the sequence in which he follows the two reminds me of this scene in Kingdom Come, which is always cool.

However, this is not enough to salvage this story for me. This just feels like padding until we get to the first issue of DC K.O. Why did DC not release that this week and chose to release this one-shot instead? To pad out the trade? To see if they could squeeze more money out of their readers? To build interest for DC K.O.? Nah couldn’t be that last one.

Because, let’s be honest, how many of you remembered this was coming out this week? Or if you did, cared to pick it over Absolute Evil or Batman?

Not that I can recommend that you do so.

Recommended If

  • You’re a Wally West fan.
  • You’re collecting all the issues leading up to DC K.O.
  • You have extra money (in that case give it to me instead of spending it on this comic 😅)

Overall

Justice League: The Omega Act Special #1 is an unnecessary comic that joins the rank of pointless preludes like Dark Days: The Forge, Justice League #75, and the entirety of Countdown. Wally gets to shine but a single match isn’t enough to light up the dark empty void that is this comic.

Score: 3/10
