LACC ’25: Tom King talks LOVE EVERLASTING book and film

6 days ago 8

I’ve attended enough conventions to realize that the heart and soul of all these events can be found walking up and down the artist alley. This year at Los Angeles Comic Con 2025, I was fortunate enough to catch up with Tom King. Getting a signature on my copy of Love Everlasting led to a pleasant conversation about what is in store for the upcoming film and the ongoing comic series.

Check out the interview below:

Javier Perez: I’m here talking with Tom King. I am at LACC on the last day. How are you doing?

Tom King: I’m doing very well. It’s been a wonderful con. I grew up here, so it’s like coming home.  This is my second time doing this con. I grew up in LA, and when I was a kid, I never went to cons.

I don’t know how long LACC has been going on for; this used to be the Stan Lee con for the longest time.

Perez: I’d like to ask you about the ongoing process of getting Love Everlasting into a TV show and whether we’ll be getting some more new books.

King: Love Everlasting is at Sony Pictures now, with Lenny Abramson directing. It’s in the process of being made into a movie. I’m there every step of the way. Yeah, I’m a producer on it. I’m working on a variety of projects now. I co-created the Lantern show. It’s coming out on HBO. I’m show running a Mr. Miracle TV show and writing the Archie movie. I’m doing a lot of Hollywood stuff.

Perez: How is Love Everlasting different from those projects?

King: Love Everlasting is very special to me. Obviously, it’s an indie book. It’s Elsa Charretier and me. It comes directly from our imagination. Directly from our love and analysis of a bizarre, complex genre of romance comics. To me, the biggest difference is that I feel like Love Everlasting Vol. 2 is the best thing I’ve ever written.

I want to get that energy and put it onto a screen. I’m just so proud of that book.

Perez: Why do you feel that way about it?

King: I mean, it’s complicated, but you’ve got to pick something. When I look at that book, the techniques I’m using, the narrative techniques, the blending of Elsa’s pictures and my words, everything is just … When you’re a writer, sometimes it’s about the passion, sometimes it’s just about the craft.

From a craft standpoint, I used a lot of different methods of telling a very complicated story in an interesting way, so I’m super proud of it.

Perez: Is there anything you’d like to tell Love Everlasting fans, or people who are looking forward to the show?

King: Elsa and I are halfway through the story. It will be 30 issues altogether. The first 15 are out. That’s the first three volumes. The third trade just came out. We know how it’s going to end. I’ve plotted out the entire story. We’re just waiting for the planets to align so we can get back into the book. We’re taking this long break in between as the movie is moving forward. Eventually, the book will come back, and we’ll finish the story.

Perez: Thank you so much. Is there anything else you’d like to add?

King: Just how much I love this book and how much I appreciate the Beat, which highlighted this book many times. Love Everlasting was a passion project of mine. I read a lot of mainstream. This is a weird book. People who pick it up are like, What the hell is this? It’s about a woman trapped in romance stories.

I appreciate fans going along with that weirdness and discovering that, within that, there are huge themes and incredible passions of Elsa and me in this book. Thank you so much.
