The History of Mechagodzilla, Explained
Image via Legendary PicturesIntroduced back in 1974's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, the mechanized kaiju was originally the creation of the Simeon species from Black Hole Planet 3, who hoped to use it to conquer Earth before losing their own home world to a cosmic cataclysm. While Mechagodzilla did indeed fall in battle during its first film appearance, the character has returned time and time in entries such as 1975's The Terror of Mechagodzilla to 2017's Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters to 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong.
In that time, Mechagodzilla has gone from an overt threat to humanity's best attempt to protect itself against the threat of towering kaiju, with each major iteration of the character offering a different take on its origins and overall purpose. These shifts are even frequently seen within individual appearances, with Godzilla vs. Kong seeing Mechagodzilla move from one side of the battle to another thanks to Gidorah's influence.
With just one issue left before the series comes to a close, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Godzilla: Infinity Roar #5. Writer Gerry Duggan previously opened up about the series, noting that "Most movie stars are a giant pain in the ass, but not Godzilla... And I can say the ideas that are in the mix now are going to make this the biggest, craziest, and most dangerous Godzilla crossover ever. The Marvel Universe has never been in more peril! See you in space."
