Marvel’s West Coast Avengers Just Saved Iron Man’s Most Iconic ‘80s Armor from Retirement

The following contains major spoilers for West Coast Avengers #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel's new West Coast Avengers just gave Tony Stark one more reason to bring back a fan-favorite armor, and it still has the shoulder pads.

West Coast Avengers #1 finds the eponymous team caught in the middle of an attack by the Sovereign Sons, who wouldn't pose nearly as much of a threat if it weren't for Tony Stark's current lack of available Iron Man armor. Fortunately, Tony still has one suit stashed away in an unassuming storage unit for just this sort of occasion. Unfortunately, the Silver Centurion hasn't been fired up in quite some time. So long, in fact, that Tony can't truly become Iron Man until he has "upgraded" his old armor with a couple of car batteries first.

The Iron Man Model 8 Armor, or Silver Centurion, made its debut in the pages of 1985's Iron Man #200 by writer Denny O'Neil and artist Mark Bright. Originally intended to be worn by James "Rhodey" Rhodes, better known as War Machine, the Silver Centurion armor was one of several overpowered suits of its era. During its time in action, the Silver Centurion helped Tony overcome the likes of Obadiah Stane and Ultimo.

The West Coast branch of the Avengers have been a part of Marvel Comics since first officially forming in the pages of 1984's West Coast Avengers #1 by Roger Stern and Bob Hall. The earliest iteration of the team consisted of Hawkeye, Wonder Man, Mockingbird, Tigra, and James Rhodes as Iron Man, and was formed during the primary Avengers' disappearance during the events of Marvel Comics' Secret Wars. Though the West Coast Avengers were only ever meant to fill in for the main roster, the team has been given numerous chances at the spotlight over the years, with the impact of their adventures still directly affecting the likes of Moon Knight today.
