Marvel Teases Scarlet Witch’s Triumphant Return With A Gruesome Twist

4 days ago 8

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get its Scarlet Witch back. Or rather, the most terrifying version of the character is about to step into her predecessor's old place.

As seen in a recent Twitter post from fan account Cosmic Marvel, Marvel Animation has just unveiled a new character poster for the upcoming Marvel Zombies streaming series. The poster features a zombified Scarlet Witch looming overhead of other superpowered ghouls in front of a crimson sky, her gaze locked ominously on viewers themselves.

The wider Marvel Zombies mythos has been a fan-favorite part of Marvel Comics since the release of 2005's Ultimate Fantastic Four #21 by writer Mark Millar and artist Greg Land. The first Marvel Zombies were a twisted version of The Fantastic Four who were given passage to the original Ultimate Universe of Earth-1610 by its Reed Richards, who believed he had found another benevolent version of himself with whom he could collaborate. Instead, Reed opened the door to a whole new breed of horror that washed over numerous realities across the Multiverse and has been re-imagined multiple times.

The Marvel Zombies of the MCU made their debut during the first season of Marvel Studios' What If... in the episode "What If... Zombies!" Rather than coming from an entirely separate corner of the Multiverse, these Marvel Zombies emerged from their world's Quantum Realm, where a lost Janet van Dyne became patient zero for the impending outbreak. The upcoming Marvel Zombies animated series will feature a ragtag group of superhuman survivors including Red Guardian, Shang-Chi, Ant-Man, the U.S. Aget, Kate Bishop, Valkyrie, Riri Williams, and Kamala Khan, all voiced by their respective MCU stars. The series will also introduce a new version of Eric Brooks (voiced by Todd Williams), a.k.a Blade, who goes on to become the Fist of Khonshu, better known as Moon Knight.

What Can Fans Expect From Marvel Zombies?

Director Bryan Andrews promised fans that, while Marvel Zombies will feature plenty of brutal and bloody action, the series largely avoids being "gratuitous" in terms of its violence thanks to the character-driven nature of the story at hand. "I think the rating comes from the level of violence and or intensity of the moments that the characters find themselves in. And yeah, blood gets spilled, and we want to be able to see that," Andrews explained. He went on to note that featuring such explicit violence on screen was "not about providing just a tremendous amount of gore. We could have easily done that, but we didn't need to... But, yeah, there is some gore, but it isn't about just the gore, you know what I mean?"

Marvel Zombies is set to tear its way onto Disney+ on Sept. 24.
