Image via SkyboundImage Comics' new M.A.S.K. series debuted last month and kicked off the next phase of the Energon Universe. Now, its creative team has revealed what fans can expect when the series inevitably crosses over with Transformers and G.I. Joe.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, M.A.S.K. series writer Dan Watters and artist Pye Parr shared exciting new information about how the series connects to the larger Energon Universe and when it will take center stage. "As to how much [the Energon Universe titles are] going to sort of tie in and be important for each other, yeah, very much so. Particularly as we sort of get into our second arc, you’re going to see elements from the other books, definitely, and in a big way," Watters revealed.
M.A.S.K.'s Upcoming G.I. Joe and Transformers Crossovers Are Now Confirmed
As part of the new Energon Universe, M.A.S.K. was guaranteed to take place in the same timeline as its G.I. Joe and Transformers counterparts, but it seems that a more direct crossover is certainly in the works in the coming months, though exact details have yet to be revealed. "Because again, MASK is, the whole thing that Trakker is doing, what Mayhem is doing, are both responses in the first place to things that have happened in the other books," Watters added.
"They are responses to the energy source Energon arriving on Earth and what that has done to technology, and the Transformers arriving on Earth and, you know, smashing up cities," Watters continued. "All of this stuff has been happening over the last few years, and MASK is a response to that, so it will continue to respond to it."
The first issue of M.A.S.K. launched on June 10, with Matt Trakker and his network of specialists deploying their cutting-edge tech in the ongoing battle against Miles Mayhem and V.E.N.O.M. In teasers for the series, Image Comics promised "anyone - and everyone - in the Energon Universe must join the fight for humanity's survival."
That roster of characters fighting for humanity will expand even further when the second issue hits stands on July 8. The first issue foreshadowed Trakker not knowing his team, which Parr revealed will be an evolving part of the story going forward. "It’s quite fun actually, because not only are they being introduced to you, they’re being introduced to each other."
Parr added, "Trakker throws them together, and in issue two, two of the MASK agents, who don’t know each other, end up stuck in a car in a life-threatening situation. So it’s fun."
The Energon Universe Directly Inspired the New M.A.S.K. Series
Image via Skybound Entertainment and Image ComicsIt goes without saying that the original 1980s M.A.S.K. series laid the blueprint for Image Comics rebooting the series, but the creative team also revealed how the other Energon Universe titles inspired them when creating their new story. "It’s also about looking at where it was coming from and what was sort of inspiring it to exist in the first place, which is obviously some of the stuff that’s already in the Energon Universe," Watters shared.
Naturally, some other iconic 80s series also had an influence. "I think sort of the Knight Rider of It all, the sort of 80s sports car stuff, it was all kind of there in the franchise. A bunch of mad science and sort of crisis reaction stuff, those kinds of things all felt like they were very in the DNA."
M.A.S.K. #1 is on sale now from Image Comics, and the second issue arrives on July 8.
