Netflix Facing Class Action Lawsuit Over Tyson v. Paul Streaming Failures

Netflix is facing a class action lawsuit for the streaming problems that occurred during last week’s live boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. Subscribers are preparing a class action lawsuit after experiencing continual buffering and paying issues that caused viewers to miss chunks of Tyson and Paul’s fight, according to Hollywood Reporter.

The fight became the most-watched sporting event on Netflix, with 108 million viewers worldwide. Tens of thousands of users, however, have experienced issues with the streaming service. During the match, people criticized Netflix on social media, with “NetflixBroken,” “unwatchable,” and “#buffering” trending on X.

The lawsuit is apparently seeking unspecified damages on behalf of customers who were unable to see portions of the fight, resulting in breach of contract claims and charges of violations of Florida statutes governing deceptive trade practices and consumer protection. The complaint also alleges that Netflix refused to issue refunds or discounts as a result of the incident.

“Instead of providing the programming its viewers pay for every month, Netflix was completely unprepared and unable to fix the issues,” the lawsuit reads, adding that the streaming platform had failed “to fulfill contractual obligations” as the company “continued billing for services not delivered.”

Before the match, when asked if the streaming giant was ready for the influx of spectators, Gabe Spritzer, Vice President of Netflix’s sports division, told Hollywood Reporter, “On the tech side, everyone is excited and prepared.” Fight promoter Nakisa Bidarian also spoke up, claiming that Netflix’s “servers are going to be up for it.”

However, at 8:00 p.m. EST, Netflix members began experiencing streaming troubles, according to Down Detector, which tracks service failures. Around three hours later, nearly 97,000 reports were recorded.
