NYCC ’25: DC Comics to complete Rick Veitch’s scuttled run with SWAMP THING 1989

3 weeks ago 18

In 1989, writer Rick Veitch wrote an issue of Swamp Thing wherein the title character was present at Jesus’ crucifixion, but the management at the time decided not to publish it. Veitch left the book and the run was never completed—until now.

At the DC Vertigo panel Thursday at New York Comic Con, the publisher announced that it would be finishing the story with a four-issue series called Swamp Thing 1989Swamp Thing #88 will be published as it was intended, and then artist Tom Mandrake and colorist Trish Mulvihill will be working with Veitch on the next three issues.

The series will launch in April 2026, and all four issues will be presented with the trade dress and (maybe even) the ads of the time.

“You’re going to be able to put these into your long boxes as if this run had never ended,” said DC Comics Executive Editor Chris Conroy, who made the announcement at the panel.

And while that announcement was made at the DC Vertigo panel, Swamp Thing 1989 will be published as part of DC Black Label.
