Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.
It is not uncommon for a comic book fan to desire the ability to control the story they are reading to their liking. Fortunately, such a comic book does exist, and Oni Press is coming out with a new sci-fi tale that will take readers to the stars.
This summer, the publisher invites thrill-seekers to embark on a high-stakes journey of cosmic proportions with Choose Your Own Adventure: Space and Beyond.
The comic book is a graphic novel adaptation of the synonymous fourth installment of Bantam Books' seminal series that allowed readers to be the protagonists of their own bizarre and otherworldly stories. Choose Your Own Adventure: Space and Beyond, Oni Press' fourth officially licensed comic book based on the series, is a journey through worlds beyond Earth with 44 possible outcomes.
Readers have the freedom to decide their planet of origin, whether to trust the strange creatures they meet on their crusade, and plenty more challenging decisions. There is no right or wrong response to any of the obstacles they face, but whichever page they choose to turn to could see them becoming a hero to a desperate planet, stranded on a desolate world, or even trapped in another time with prehistoric creatures.
Jeremy Lambert — who worked as a Hollywood extras casting director before writing comic books based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Goosebumps, and other beloved properties — takes on the task of imagining the various potential scenarios readers may encounter in Choose Your Own Adventure: Space and Beyond. Bringing the world of the multifaceted story to life is artist Dani Bolinho, who has illustrated a few of Oni Press' previous Choose Your Own Adventure comics.
The original Choose Your Own Adventure: Space and Beyond novel was published in 1980 and written by R.A. Montgomery, who was an essential contributor to the hit book series at the peak of its popularity. Fun fact: the concept for the interactive book was invented by Edward Packard, whose grandson is Superman actor David Corenswet.
Choose Your Own Adventure Stories Are Making A Comeback
Image via Oni PressChoose Your Own Adventure: Space and Beyond is coming out at a great time, and not just because Oni Press has already had success with their graphic novelizations of the original series' classic tales. The concept of interactive entertainment has been pretty hot lately, with signs of it only becoming bigger.
In fact, other comic book publishers have experimented with the concept in recent years, such as with Marvel's You Are Deadpool, a Trekkie's dream come true in Star Trek: Lower Decks — Warp Your Own Way, and Jason Shiga's Adventuregame Comics series. There are even interactive stories like this outside of printed media, such as an animated Choose Your Own Adventure movie called The Abominable Snowman, which starred William H. Macy and Frankie Muniz and went straight to DVD in 2006.
The most famous example would have to be Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, a "feature-length" spin-off of the hit sci-fi anthology series that allows viewers to determine what the protagonist, aspiring video game developer Stefan (Fionn Whitehead), will do next. Its successful premiere in 2018 inspired Netflix to produce more interactive programs, such as the Bear Grylls-starring You vs. Wild and The Boss Baby: Get That Baby!, all of which have since been removed from the platform.
Thankfully, it appears that baffling decision would not mark the end of this trend, as a new official Choose Your Own Adventure movie is now in the works. 20th Century Studios tapped Radio Silence's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, co-directors of acclaimed modern horror flicks like Ready or Not and the fifth and sixth Scream installments, to helm the feature from writer Tom Bissell of Andor fame.
Choose Your Own Adventure: Space and Beyond hits the shelves on Aug. 4.
