Quentin Tarantino’s Django/Zorro Crossover Movie in the Works

Sony is moving ahead with a new crossover film that brings back Django and pairs him with Zorro, according to Deadline. The project is based on the 2015 comic series Django/Zorro, created by Quentin Tarantino and Matt Wagner. Oscar-winning writer Brian Helgeland, known for L.A. Confidential, is handling the script.  The film will not be directed by Tarantino, but he has approved the project. Reports say the story is a continuation of the comic, which followed Django teaming up with an older Diego de la Vega, the man behind the Zorro mask.

The Django/Zorro crossover started as a seven‑issue comic miniseries from Dynamite Entertainment, scripted by Quentin Tarantino and Matt Wagner and illustrated by Esteve Polls. The limited run hit comicshop shelves monthly between 2014 and 2015, blending Django’s bloody revenge western style with the masked swashbuckling of Zorro. That original comic miniseries is now the direct source material for Sony’s upcoming film, which plans to follow on from the story laid out in those issues rather than simply remaking them.

This film version is separate from an earlier attempt in 2019, when Tarantino and Jerrod Carmichael wrote a draft that aimed to bring Django together with the version of Zorro seen in The Mask of Zorro. At the time, Antonio Banderas was being considered to return. That version never moved forward, but there is still industry talk that Banderas could be brought back if the timing works. The script is still in early development.

The earlier project stalled during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tarantino has also stayed firm on his long stated plan to direct only ten films. His ninth film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, was released in 2019. Since then, several ideas have come and gone, including The Movie Critic, which was canceled before production after Tarantino reportedly lost interest.

Even so, Tarantino remains involved in Hollywood projects. He wrote the script for The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The film is being directed by David Fincher for Netflix and stars Brad Pitt. A trailer aired during the Super Bowl this year, teasing a 2026 release. It is not clear if Leonardo DiCaprio will return.

For fans of classic characters and gritty westerns, the new Django/Zorro film signals that studios are still willing to bet on bold crossover ideas. With Tarantino’s stamp of approval and a proven writer attached, the project already has more momentum than past attempts.
