“Monster Isle”
The beastly humanoids came to fill some savage curiosity as Red Sonja trailed through the jungle brush. Two survivors of the shipwreck hacked through vines and fauna next to her as their goal was to make it to high ground before nightfall. Then one of the sailors yelled out in pure terror.
A wild boar had lunged at Ratvos, burying its yellowing tusks into his belly in seconds. Sonja drew her sword but hesitated as she realized this was more than an animal. It was some combination of man and beast. By Mitra! What madness was this? Then a guttural roar came from her left as Captain Todo sprinted past her and began to hack at the monstrosity with his own scimitar. It mattered little, as Ratvos bled to death before them.
Did Captain Todo angered the gods by allowing a red-haired woman aboard his ship? Who is the caretaker forgotten by the Zingaran justice system? What nightmares awaited Red Sonja on the Isle of Chains? Collect the one-shot to find out!
Review
Roy Thomas has written some bizarre stories over the years, but this chapter in Red Sonja’s chronicles has to be one of the weirdest. I can only describe Red Sonja: Monster Isle as a combination of Jason and the Argonauts and The Island of Dr. Moreau. There is no escaping the comparisons.
I found this one-shot fun and the artwork very unique. Any fan of Red Sonja should enjoy this 2006 release by Dynamite Entertainment. I give it a solid three out of five stars. Now, can someone explain who or what Borat-Nar Fori is?
