Review: Amazon’s ‘Fallout’ Season 2 Episode 5 “The Wrangler”

Family is a hard thing. A simple statement, sure, but it’s the central theme of this episode of Fallout’s second season, “The Wrangler.” The episode slows the pace a bit as the characters reflect on past actions and those yet to come. Despite that slower tempo, the drama, mystery, and dark humor all remain firmly intact—especially with a few familiar faces returning from season one.

I was left wondering how our intrepid pair would escape the deathclaw at the end of episode 4, but they handle it the way most of us would when under armed and under-leveled—run and put something big between you and the monster. A gate works. Although I did have to give a bit on my suspension of disbelief about that gate. After escaping, Lucy and the Ghoul catch their breath in Freeside, a lively section of New Vegas where life still clings on. Civilization here is a fragile thing; ownership can change in a heartbeat, often through violence—the law of the Wasteland, as Lucy keeps learning. I had to wonder how things were still being held together, especially in the seeming absence of Mr. House’s securitrons or any of the other factions.

Meanwhile, Norm and his Vault 33 crew finally reach Vault-Tec HQ, where the vault dwellers continue carrying out the company’s murky orders. Things aren’t looking great for Norm, though; his credentials as a loyal Bud believer are under scrutiny. Still rooting for you, Norm!

The highlight for me this time was Cooper’s latest batch of flashbacks—especially his uneasy interaction with Robert House and his struggle to do what he believes is right. Beneath all the charm and swagger, Cooper’s just a guy faced with impossible, world-ending choices. The show continues to weave its century-spanning mystery beautifully, keeping past and present meaningfully connected. It’s only a matter of time til the fated relic of the Brotherhood of Steel makes its way out to Vegas.

The episode’s easter eggs were another treat. I got a laugh from the more absurd ones, especially the return of the bizarre Snake Oil Salesman (Jon Daly). I know it’s been 15 years from the events of New Vegas and the Amazon show. A lot can happen in 15 years. Still, I keep hoping for glimpses of other Mojave factions—maybe next time.

As much as I’m intrigued by this version of Mr. House and his dynamic with Cooper, I was really hoping for even a small nod to Fallout: New Vegas’ MacGuffin, the platinum chip. And without giving anything away, this episode’s spine-tingling ending really got me.

With a cliffhanger like that, I’m all in for episode 6. See you there!
