Rick and Morty Coming to 'The End' in December

1 week ago 8

Things are looking pretty bleak for Rick and Morty based on a teaser Oni Press just released for an upcoming event this December. The teaser (which you can see below) simply states "Rick and Morty. THE END."

Oni Press has been doing Rick and Morty comics almost as long as Rick and Morty has been airing on television (the first Rick and Morty cartoon debuted in December 2013, and the first Oni Press Rick and Morty comic book was released in March 2015), and it recently collected its first ONE HUNDRED Rick and Morty comic books into a giant-sized collection (it has even introduced a number of concepts that were later referenced in the cartoon). But could this long-running collaboration be reaching an end?

What could Rick and Morty: The End mean?

Perhaps the simplest explanation for the teaser is that the Rick and Morty/Oni Press collaboration is coming to an end after over a decade of comic book tie-ins, but it is very possible that this is simply suggesting a brand-new comic book adventure based on the "The End" format. For instance, Marvel has been doing comic books titled "The End" since the early 2000s, and obviously Marvel is still doing new adventures of Wolverine, Hulk, etc.

Looking at the most recent Rick and Morty crossover event, it is very possible that that could give us some guidance on what Oni Press is alluding to here.

What was the most recent Rick and Morty Oni Press crossover event?

The most recent Rick and Morty crossover event, Rick and Morty Versus the Universe, is still going, with a conclusion set for October.

Here's Oni's description of the event, which has run in a main miniseries, and a number of tie-in one-shots:

Rick’s old buddy Universe Prime (where Rick and Morty Cronenberg’d Earth) has reached his UNIVERSAL HALF-LIFE and is getting MARRIED—to the female-presenting embodiment of the Parmesan Dimension! (Where they currently live!) He’s found true love and wants his old pal Rick to plan his bachelor party! WHAT COULD GO WRONG? Answer: Pretty much everything . . . and it is all Rick’s fault! Now Rick and Morty are on the run from EVERY SINGLE UNIVERSE THEY’VE EVER MESSED WITH—meaning, no matter what dimension they escape to, the universe will literally be against them. And, to survive, Rick will be forced to do something he hoped he would never have to do—a last resort of EPIC PROPORTIONS!

It is very possible, then, that Rick's "last resort of EPIC PROPORTIONS" is something that will lead to Rick and Morty being stuck in a situation where they have to, in effect, fight the very concept of THE END. Rick and Morty famously travel through multiple dimensions, but what if that was somehow cut off from them? What if they reached the end of their rope?

Whatever the meaning behind this teaser, we'll all find out soon enough when Oni Press releases more details!
