Sony’s PS5 Latest Update Forces a Monthly Internet Check-In

9 hours ago 2

Sony has put a new rule in place for PlayStation consoles. The company confirmed the change through its support team. It starts with any digital games bought after the March 2026 system update.

Those games now need an internet connection at least once every 30 days. The console checks the license during that time. If the system stays offline longer, the games will not launch until you connect again.

The policy covers both PS5 and PS4 titles. It leaves all games already in your library alone. Setting a console as primary does nothing to skip the monthly check either.

Gamers saw the news and reacted right away. Posts spread fast across the internet. One user summed up the anger with a clear point. He wrote that Sony once mocked Xbox for the exact same idea.

That old criticism came in 2013. Sony attacked Microsoft over always online requirements then. The move helped Sony win that console generation. Now the company does something very similar without much warning. The policy feels like a clear step too far, and turns buyers into permanent renters instead of owners.

This is why it is so important to keep physical media. Discs do not need any check ins. They stay yours no matter what. Companies are gaining more and more control over what you buy and use. Digital purchases sound convenient at first. In reality they leave customers with less freedom than a simple disc ever did. You end up chasing connections just to play games you paid for. This change is intentional and not a glitch.

Will angry gamers be able toforce Sony to rethink its approach before it loses more trust?
