Growing up in rural Iowa as a reluctant reader, it all changed when he started reading the original Fantastic Four by Lee/Kirby. Now Austin can't stop reading. He has written about comics for Comic Book Yeti and he has also written tons of indie comics, best known for Big Guns Stupid Rednecks.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, from their humble beginnings as a self-published black-and-white comic franchise, spawned comics, cartoons, feature films, video games, toy lines, and almost every kind of merchandise imaginable. There have been many “copycat” comics featuring four-word titles and four humanoid animals, and yet another is on the way from Oni Press.

Super Mondo Mega Mutts, by the creative team of writer Curt Pires and artist Juan Gedeon, is a four-issue limited series from Oni Press that hits comic book stores this July. Many other comics over the years have followed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles formula, attempting to generate its success. Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters, Pre-Teen Dirty-Gene Kung-Fu Kangaroos, Geriatric Gangrene Jujitsu Gerbils, and Cold Blooded Chameleon Commandos are just a few of the knockoffs to appear over the years. (And yes, those are all real titles.)

Super Mondo Mega Mutts is the newest of these inspired comics. Many creators have tried to capture the success of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, but none have come close. Could this be the first to break through the glass ceiling?

Oni Press's official solicitation gives us more information on the incoming dogs, saying: Superstar-in-the-making Curt Pires (Lost Fantasy, Fireborn) and powerhouse artist Juan Gedeon (DC: The Jurassic League) crank the chaos to 11 in the next explosive chapter of the comic book odyssey that’s sure to have tails wagging!

When the Mega Mutts—Wolf, Frankee, Freddie, and Griffy—step in to stop the Goo Gang from unleashing total mayhem on the streets of Los Angeles, they don’t just save the day, they paint a target on their backs. Now the powerful and shadowy Grey Cube corporation is coming for them—and this time it’s personal. Outgunned and on the run, the Mutts are pushed to their limits as the action erupts into full-blown, city-shaking mayhem. And just when things couldn’t get any wilder...enter Krusher Kat! Explosions! Attitude! And claws-out combat as the fur flies in an all-out battle for survival! Don’t miss the issue that ups the stakes, ups the action—and proves these underdogs don’t back down!

With the recent success of the IDW Comics' series, which is about to hit landmark issue #300, now is the time to strike with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-inspired comic. Since 1983, the turtles have remained at the forefront of pop culture. What set the turtles apart from the other animal comics is that behind the goofy idea was the fact it was truly a great comic book. Pulling inspiration from comic book legends Frank Miller and Jack Kirby, Peter and Kevin were able to use storytelling tricks from the masters and still make the comic their own.

Lightning rarely strikes the same place twice, but maybe Super Mondo Mega Mutts will become the next Walking Dead, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Invincible all mixed together. Only time will tell what is in-store for these K-9's, and we will all see if their bark matches their bite. Maybe throwing a cat into the mix is what will take it to the next level.

Super Mondo Mega Mutts #1, can be purchased this July wherever comics are sold.
