The Conjuring's Michael Chaves is bringing a whole new breed of horror to Image Comics.

Per Bleeding Cool, Michael Chaves, the director behind four entries in The Conjuring franchise (including the recently released The Conjuring: Last Rites), is officially bringing his distinct horror sensibilities to a brand-new series from Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment — Corpse Knight.

The upcoming series will drop readers into the middle of a war-ravaged France, one where the young Foy's life takes a drastic turn when her deceased father returns as her undying protector. Written by Michael Chaves with art by Matthew Roberts and colors by Rico Renzi, Corpse Knight is poised to become one of the hottest limited series of the year. Corpse Knight #1 is currently slated to arrive in stores on April 22.

As Foy struggles to fend for herself, she’s granted a miracle — her father returns from the dead to protect her. Now, they embark on a sacred quest, confronting murderers, wild animals, wandering armies, and black magic plaguing the countryside. As Foy comes face to face with the dark side of miracles and the secrets of the Corpse Knight, she must question if the man by her side has always been a monster...

What's Been Said About Corpse Knight So Far?

Chaves himself opened up about the series, explaining that "Corpse Knight was born out of my love of dark fantasy, but it quickly became something more. It's a story of parenthood and mortality, told through heroes, monsters, and all the shades in between." Chavez also sang high praises for the rest of the series' creative team.

"I've been a fan of Matthew Roberts since Manifest Destiny, and I truly believe this is some of his finest work," Chaves added. "His art is beautiful, tactile, and, when it needs to be, amazingly gruesome. Alongside Rico Renzi's awesome color work, it's everything you want from this kind of book."

Artist Matthew Roberts teased the incredibly tense, character-driven narrative at the heart of Corpse Knight, noting, "Michael's script has allowed me to play in a way I've not in the past, taking big swings but always feeling grounded by the family bond at the center. That bond is where I find the light, and it makes all the gruesome stuff even more fun to play with."

For those still on the fence when it comes to Corpse Knight, Skybound Entertainment Editorial Director Alex Antone said of the series, "Horror masters Michael Chaves and Matthew Roberts have delivered a beautifully tragic story about the lengths a parent will go to protect their child... Fans of King Spawn and The Darkness will eat this right up."

Corpse Knight #1 from Image Comics goes on sale starting on Apr. 22.
