An underrated horror film starring Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's Chukwudi Iwuji is making major waves on Netflix.

Nearly five years after failing to make a significant impact with critics, The Girl Who Got Away, starring Lexi Johnson and Chukwudi Iwuji, is finally finding its audience on the streaming platform Netflix. Over the past month, The Girl Who Got Away has drifted off and on the list of the top ten films currently available for streaming on the platform.

Written and directed by Michael Morrissey, The Girl Who Got Away stars Lexi Johnson as Christina Bowden, the sole survivor of serial killer Elizabeth Caulfield, portrayed by Kaye Tuckerman. When Elizabeth escapes from prison decades after her reign of terror was brought to an end, she targets the eponymous girl who got away, who has only just begun her own parenting journey.

Alongside Johnson and Tuckerman, The Girl Who Got Away stars Chukwudi Iwuji as Officer Jamie Nwosu, who quickly becomes embroiled in the film's unsettling mystery as it slowly unravels. Rounding out the core cast of The Girl Who Got Away are Willow McCarthy as the young Lisa Spencer, Catherine Campbell and Geoffrey Cantor as Eileen and Terry Caldwell, Aubin Bradley as Tracey Fields, and Timothy J. Alex as Joe Tulane.

Upon its release in 2022, The Girl Who Got Away was met with largely positive reviews, even if there weren't a whole lot of those to go around for the film in general. As of the time of writing, The Girl Who Got Away holds an 86% audience-generated "Popcornmeter" score via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as averaged across more than 500 verified user-submitted reviews of the film.

Although The Girl Who Got Away does not currently hold enough verified critical reviews on Rotten Tomatoes to generate an official "Tomatometer" score for the film, the majority of the reviews it does have on the platform are overwhelmingly positive. The lowest of these reviews scores the film at a 3/5 as a whole.

What's Next for The Girl Who Got Away Star Chukwudi Iwuji?

Most recently, fans saw Chukwudi Iwuji star alongside LaKeith Stanfield and Mark Wahlberg in Play Dirty from director Shane Black. The film was released via Prime Video back in October 2025, and was met with a middling reception at best from both audiences and critics. Fortunately, fans of Iwuji's work won't have to wait long before they can see their favorite star return to the silver screen for a decidedly different kind of cinematic experience.

Set to be released on Jan. 30, writer-director Yelena Popovic's Moses the Black will feature Iwuji in the role of St. Moses the Black. Moses the Black is inspired by the 4th-century story of St. Moses the Black, who was part of a violent band of robbers before converting to Christianity and leading a monastic life. Alongside Iwuji, Moses the Black stars Omar Epps, Wiz Khalifa, Quavo, Ahmad Ferguson, and Corey Hendrix.

The Girl Who Got Away is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
