The Most Powerful X-Men Veteran is About to Break the Marvel Universe to Save Their Family

The following contains major spoilers for Phoenix #14, on sale August 27 from Marvel Comics.

Marvel's premiere Phoenix Force wielder is about to rewrite the rules of reality itself to save one long-lost family member.

In a preview of Phoenix #14 (by Stephanie Phillips, Roi Mercado, Java Tartaglia, and VC's Cory Petit) from Marvel Comics, readers find Jean Grey crying out in pain for her sister, Sara. Try as she might, Jean simply cannot bring Sara back into the primary Marvel Universe, not while the latter's presence might tear it asunder. Of course, the Phoenix has never been one to let the universe tell her what to do, and she is more than willing to bend it to her will if it means getting her sister back.

First seen in the pages of 1980's X-Men #136 by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, Sara Grey was Jean's older sister, who lived a relatively ordinary life with her husband, Paul Bailey, and children, Gailyn and Joey. At least, she did until Sara's life was upset by the sudden arrival of Attuma, who kidnapped her and Jean in the hopes of creating unstoppable offspring with the surface mutants. Although Jean was able to defeat Attuma and free Sara and herself, that wasn't the last time that Sara would be terrorized by nefarious forces she herself had nothing to do with, nor the worst of such encounters.

In 1994's X-Men #36 by Fabian Nicieza and Andy Kubert, Sara was murdered by anti-mutant fanatics, who were likely tipped off to her location by none other than Cameron Hodge. Following Sara's untimely demise, her body was absorbed by the malevolent Phalanx. This added just another layer of horror to Sara's story, which could have easily been a rare example of a mutant living a happy life with their purported powers having remained entirely dormant. While that was far from creator Chris Claremont's original plan for the character, it still would have stood as an example of what life could be like for the mutants of the Marvel Universe.

In recent months, Jean received a message from Sara, who appeared to still be alive and well despite everything that had happened to her previously. As Cable explained to Jean, Sara's return in and of itself was a byproduct of her recent battle with the Dark Gods of the Shadow Realm. For whatever reason, this epic, cosmic conflict brought Sara roaring back to life, currently within the confines of the White Hot Room. Subsequently, Sara's return caught the attention of the In-Betweener, who has developed a strange fascination with her that probably won't bode well for anyone caught in the cosmic being's ominous gaze.

Phoenix #14 will be available August 27 from Marvel Comics.
