The Umbrella Academy is officially back, and its new miniseries is nothing short of a return to form for the cult classic. The new story comes nearly two years after Netflix's final season of the streaming adaptation divided fans.

Dark Horse Comics has shared new information about The Umbrella Academy: Plan B #4, which is written by Gerard Way with art by Gabriel Bá. The issue goes on sale May 20, with two more issues set to follow later this year before the miniseries wraps up. It began publication back in June 2025, with the latest story developments in issue #4 promising some major developments that fans of the Netflix series will want to check out.

The Umbrella Academy's New Miniseries Explores Allison's Backstory

Dark Horse's first look at The Umbrella Academy: Plan B #4 includes several interior pages as well as a solicit that promises a further look at Allison's backstory. "I've heard a rumor that immersing oneself in work can sometimes serve as a way to avoid confronting family problems," Dark Horse writes. "Allison will discover that sooner or later, and she’ll have to face the mistakes of her past."

The solicit goes on to tease that other Umbrella Academy characters will face similar challenges in the new issue. "Perhaps that’s what Jennifer's visions are trying to tell her as well. And maybe the Sparrows should know that no President of the United States is ever safe whenever we have a chimpanzee dressed up as Marilyn Monroe."

Plan B is a direct follow-up to Hotel Oblivion, Way's third Umbrella Academy limited comic series that was originally published in 2019. Since its premiere, Plan B sees the titular Umbrella Academy team coming face-to-face with their Sparrows counterparts, all while learning how they are connected.

Plan B's penultimate issue is set to follow on Sept. 2, and Dark Horse's solicit for the upcoming issue teases that the Sparrows will be launching their own counterstrike. "Dr. Zoo races across the cosmos, hoping to reunite the Umbrella Academy while Mom prays to a mysterious power for her children’s reunion. Meanwhile, ghosts from the past loom ever closer, and a curious detail lingers: Jennifer has two Ns, not two Fs."

The Umbrella Academy: Plan B Fixes the Unsatisfying Netflix Conclusion

The Umbrella Academy: Plan B and the other comic miniseries released by Way give fans of the series a much brighter future than it received on Netflix. The fourth and final season of the series was widely panned by fans and critics due to its unsatisfying ending, shortened episode count, rushed pacing, and several controversial story developments that left beloved characters underdeveloped.

Thankfully, the series is able to live on with Way's Dark Horse miniseries, and it's because, as the creator of the story, Way knows what fans want to see. Plan B is the first series to be released after the Netflix show ended, and thankfully, it marks the return of a cult classic, without Netflix's compromises undermining its storytelling potential.

The Umbrella Academy: Plan B #4 is on sale now from Dark Horse Comics.
