Critically acclaimed filmmaker and writer David S. Goyer confirms which key scene from The Dark Knight Rises was the very first conceived for the film.
Per That Hashtag Show, the final sequence from The Dark Knight Rises was the starting point for the final entry in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. "The first idea we came up with was that last scene," Goyer recalled. "That was the first idea and then we knew we had a movie that he got out because then we said, 'Okay, so the deal is Alfred's his proxy father. He's worried that Bruce sees no way out of this other than suicide by Batman. Death by Batman.' Right?"
Goyer continued, "that's what he's focused on and he’s never going to get out, and he's worried that that’s where his sort of adopted son is going to go and he thinks that that's where his adopted son went and then at this moment, and he sees this nod and he realizes Bruce got out and we thought, 'Oh, that that's a story worth telling.'" He added, "We had no idea what the rest of the movie was, but we had the end." Goyer also went on to note that, while he "can't imagine" another entry in Nolan's Dark Knight film series ever making it into development, he would "absolutely consider" taking the job.
Directed by Christopher Nolan from a screenplay co-written alongside Jonathan Nolan, which was based on the story the former crafted with Goyer, The Dark Knight Rises arrived in theaters in 2012 to the delight of fans everywhere. The follow-up to 2008's The Dark Knight, the film brought back Christian Bale's take on the titular Caped Crusader, as well as Michael Caine's Alfred Pennyworth, Morgan Freeman's Lucius Fox, and Gary Oldman's James Gordon. The Dark Knight Rises also marked the debuts of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, a.k.a Catwoman, Tom Hardy as Bane, and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate, aka Talia al Ghul. The Dark Knight Rises was lauded by critics and audiences alike, with rave reviews helping it bring in more than $1.082 billion at the box office during its theatrical run.
What's Next for David S. Goyer?

For the past few years, Goyer and co-creator Josh Friedman have been helming the hit sci-fi series Foundation for Apple TV+. Based on Isaac Asimov's Foundation series of novellas and short stories, Foundation follows the goings-on of the "genetic dynasty" lorded over by three clones of the Emperor, each of whom has aged to a very different point in their shared life and is tasked with overseeing a different aspect of their rule. Foundation was recently renewed for Season 4, to which co-showrunners Ian Goldberg and David Kob responded in a statement, "There is no series quite like Foundation, and we feel lucky and honored to be carrying the torch forward as co-showrunners into Season 4. We look forward to continuing the epic, emotional storytelling that defined the first three seasons of the show, and to be working alongside some of the most talented, passionate creative partners in the business."
The Dark Knight Rises is streaming on HBO Max.
