The following contains major spoilers for Immortal Thor #25, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel Comics is about to kick the doors open to the life of the Mortal Thor, and he already looks to be nothing like his former self.

Immortal Thor #25 (by Al Ewing, Jan Bazaldua, Justin Greenwood, Pasqual Ferry, Matt Hollingsworth, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and VC's Joe Sabino) marked the final confrontation between the God of Thunder and the dreaded Utgard-Loki, at least for now. With the help of his allies, Thor prevented his ancient enemy from laying waste to Asgard, all at the expense of the Rainbow Bridge that once connected his homeland to the other Realms. Unfortunately, the Rainbow Bridge wasn't the only thing Thor sacrificed that day, as in his latest confrontation with Donald Blake, Thor also seemingly subsumed the single mortal soul that existed between them, and in doing so was reborn on Earth in an all-too-human fashion.

Now, Thor exists as Sigurd Jarlson, an apparently ordinary man, albeit one of a slightly extraordinary stature. Upon awakening on Earth after giving up everything he knew and loved, Thor, or Sigurd, is accosted by the young Lukki, which the former God of Thunder misunderstands as Lucky. While it is obvious enough to readers that this mischievous new character is some form of Loki in disguise, what exactly he has in store for his once-immortal brother remains to be seen, as does what role Donald Blake might have to play in the story of The Mortal Thor when the series' first issue hits comic book store shelves everywhere on August 27.

First seen in 1962's Journey Into Mystery #83 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby, the man known as Donald Blake was introduced as a human doctor from the United States who, during a trip to Norway, was accosted by aliens and took hold of the mystic walking stick that originally transformed him into Thor. Over the years, Blake played the role of Thor's human alter-ego and host, although the truth behind his existence was eventually revealed to be far more sinister and tragic than that. As it turns out, Blake was only ever the facsimile of a man created by Odin in the hopes of teaching his son what it meant to be human and gain some humility. When Thor died at the hands of the Asgardian Serpent, he and Blake's connection was severed, with the latter being relegated to a realm of abject terror, albeit in a state of peaceful slumber. This twisted Blake's psyche, and he soon became not just a deicidal serial killer, but Asgard's latest God of Lies, not to mention host to the Serpent symbiote.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of The Mortal Thor #1 by writer Al Ewing and artist Pasqual Ferry, which will mark the beginning of a whole new era for the (former) God of Thunder, as well as the entirety of Asgard and its associated realms. The official solicit synopsis for The Mortal Thor #1 from Marvel Comics reads, "The legend begins! The Norse Myths tell of Gods who walked the Earth, doing great deeds for the mortals who believed in them. But Asgard isn't real, and never was. The Gods never soared in our skies, never stood with our heroes, never fought for kindness or justice. It was all just a story. Nobody's coming to help us. But somewhere in the city... a man is waking up. A man with a hammer."

Immortal Thor #25 is available now from Marvel Comics. The Mortal Thor #1 goes on sale August 27.
