The Hanna-Barbera cat-and-mouse duo, Tom and Jerry, is celebrating their 85th birthday this year. To commemorate the occasion, Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products is holding a year-long celebration to keep the fan-favorite anthropomorphic characters in the spotlight and introduce them to new audiences by partnering with on-trend fashion and lifestyle partners.
One of the major highlights of the Warner Bros. initiative is the kawaii anime-inspired short-form series Tom and Jerry Gokko (in Japanese, “gokko” means make-believe play).
Launching on WB Kids‘ English-language channel in July 2025, the series has garnered over 70 million views across all platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X, and TikTok (with themed filters), and related posts on @WBStyle, “outperforming other content by 78 percent in June and July,” according to Animation Magazine.
To capitalize on the momentum, Warner Bros. has launched a Tom and Jerry Gokko TikTok filter, which is rapidly gaining popularity as fans share their playful chase scenes across social media. In addition, the company announced that brand-new Tom and Jerry Gokko lines will be launching soon at key retailers, including a collection from ASDA Home in the first half of 2026 in the U.K. and Converse sneakers in the U.S.
“Bringing a kawaii spin to Tom and Jerry through Gokko is a timely way to refresh the aesthetics and tone of the brand without compromising its core DNA,” said Johanne Broadfield, Group Vice President, Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, EMEA, Regional Franchise Management and Marketing, and Regional Category Management.
Broadfield added, “Classic brands never go out of style, but they do evolve. Tom and Jerry at 85 proves that timeless storytelling paired with modern partners keeps the chase as fun—and fashionable—as ever.”
Tom and Jerry Gokko originally aired in 2022 on Cartoon Network Japan to celebrate the country’s national “Cheese Day” on November 11. This day was established in 1992 to celebrate the oldest confirmed record of the production of cheese in Japan.
Directed by Kodai Sato and produced by Warner Bros. Japan, Fanworks (Aggretsuko) and Studio Nanahoshi (Kuromi’s Pretty Journey), the series was inspired by the kawaii designs and pastel hues of the Kodansha manga series Tom and Jerry: Seven Colors, created by Chara Chara Makiart. (Note: The manga was canceled after five chapters when one of the CCM members was convicted of a crime against a child, and the anime series abandoned designs by the creative team as a result).
While the anime initially only aired in Japan, it was eventually released in China in April 2025 and then across English-language platforms in July 2025.
