It has been 24 years since the crew of the Starship Voyager finished its dramatic seven-season-long mission on the hit series, Star Trek: Voyager. That mission was to return to Federation territory after being stranded on the far side of the Galaxy in the remote Delta Quadrant for years. Now, however, we will finally see what will happen NEXT to the crew after their return, in a new series called Star Trek: Voyager - Homecoming from IDW Publishing, written by the married writing team of Susan and Tilly Bridges, and with art by Ángel Hernández'.
During Comic-Con International at San Diego, CBR's Sean O'Connell was able to talk to IDW's Star Trek writers, and the Bridges explained how the very title of the series, Star Trek: Voyager - Homecoming, evokes the dual nature of what "home" is, exactly.
What is the dual role of the term "home" in Star Trek: Voyager: Homecoming?

When O'Connell asked about the term "home," Tilly Bridges (one-half of the writing team on the series) explained, "Of course, there's the surface, 'We need to get home.' It's been the whole point of the show. We need to get these people back home. It's Janeway's entire mission."
Again, that WAS what the crew strived for for all of those years, to one day get back home. However, as Bridges points out, when you spend that much time together, your idea of what "home" is, exactly, might begin to change, "But I think in another way — I think this is true of all Star Trek casts, but I think especially on Voyager, they are each other's home, that family they have together. And so there is a little bit of melancholy to it because you don't know what's going to happen after this. They're probably going to get different assignments. They're probably going to split up. They're not going to be the same crew on the same ship. And so there's a finality to that. It undercuts things a bit. They're so happy to get home, but it also means the possibility of losing the people they've been with."
In other words, as Marvin Gaye so famously sang over 50 years ago, "Wherever I lay my hat, that's my home." For the Voyager crew, the ship BECAME their home, the crew their family, and now that family is ending.
What comes next for the Voyager crew?
While many of the crew members of Voyager are thrilled to return to their family and their old lives, there are also crew members like The Doctor and Seven of Nine who DON'T easily fit into society back on Earth.
However, as the solicitation for the series notes, the rest of the crew won't be able to get a chance to adjust easily, either! You see, as the solicitations for the first two issues explain, its not as simple as the ship just easily returning to Earth. The first issue's solicitation reveals, "Everyone is looking forward to reuniting with their friends and family after the crucibles they've faced--but there is a deadly secret in store, one that takes the crew far from home. Voyager delves back into the breach, all those aboard determined to make it back to their loved ones no matter what, even if there's hell to pay.
The SECOND issue's solicitation gives even more information, explaining, "Moments before returning to Earth, the crew of Voyager are betrayed by insurgents hidden on board! With her ship's deflector dish broken and the ship itself out of her control, Janeway must convince the aliens that Starfleet means them no harm if she's ever going to get her found family home."
