Event Hubs did some polling of what readers may think of the new fighting game Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, which adds the Muslim Ms. Marvel to the cast of battlers, and while these online polls obviously don't reflect virtually everybody, it's possible they might still have some significance. I decided to take screencaps of the following 4 poll sections as follows:
From what's told in these poll categories, it appears those who played the game were underwhelmed by how it's set up. Most interesting about which characters they select is that Kamala Khan was the least popular character on the list, which makes clear her characterization from the comics has made her unappealing here too, no matter what her outfit looks like.
At the same time, here's also commentary on Tom's Guide, which unfortunately glosses over the problems haunting the character based on the Muslim Ms. Marvel:
The surprise character for me is Ms. Marvel, who uses her stretchy limbs to attack from afar or bring opponents to her. This initial batch of characters paints a good picture of how diverse the entire roster will eventually be, gameplay-wise.What I find surprising is that this game's design actually gives the Kamala Khan character as a video game cast member a bare-legged outfit, considering she's supposed to be a devout Islamist. You could reasonably assume they're trying to distance this particular rendition from the comics counterpart, but unfortunately, it's not so simple at this stage, and doesn't excuse how the character who's considered the true Ms. Marvel, Carol Danvers, was sidelined and drastically changed, all for the sake of a politicized creation. It'd be far more beneficial if Carol were cast in this game, in her original one-piece outfit, black with lightning bolt upon it, and unfortunately, the PC Marvel's going by today ruins everything.
Sports Illustrated also hinted that players weren't as thrilled as they must want us to think:
Despite high anticipation, Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls had a rough start after its 36-hour-long Closed Beta was divided into essentially four 6-hour sessions. Players complained that this decision unnecessarily squeezed the already limited beta because of the small number of invites and the fact that it's a PlayStation-exclusive preview. [...]So far, the reception towards Tokon has been solid, but the team clearly underestimated the game's hype, "mishandling" the early launch with minimal invites and having a schedule that didn't fit many time zones. With these latest updates, they may recoup some of the goodwill they lost in the eyes of normal and competitive FGC players.
Forget it, because based on the components that will take a long time to shake regarding how the Kamala Khan character is written in the comics, that's why I can't give any backing to this game, and based on the polling, that suggests there's other, more dedicated game players in the know who think the same way. I think it's definitely terrible how there's staff at Marvel now who have a form of dislike for the new creations as much as the old, and heaped poor components upon them, but that's the modern leftism they go by. And if it affects this new game, it figures.
