Wolverine is in an insane asylum with no memory of how he ended up there.
Predictably, the asylum is filthy and poorly run, and Logan is tortured by the staff. It’s all written and handled very well—it’s just not novel to have a character in a mean loony bin. The head doctor is trying to unleash Wolverine’s “Weapon X” personality but he’s also up to all kinds of other evil stuff and creating an army of crazies. One of them will appear in a later story.
He’s called, “Charlie Chainsaws.”
As Wolverine uncovers all the evil at the facility, Nightcrawler and Psylocke track him down. In the final issue of the arc, they free him. Wolverine guts the evil doctor, who is called “Dr. Rot”–short for Dr. Rotwell.
But he survives and will be back. We see him at the end cutting up a homeless person.
