Yesterday was National Comic Book Day, and it was a blast to see so many wrestlers, both past and present, celebrating by sharing various comic strips of themselves. It’s always cool to see the crossover between two things I enjoy: wrestling and comics.
Wrestling Legends Share Their Comic Strips
A handful of wrestling legends took to social media to share their appearances in classic comic strips. Here’s a look at who posted:
“The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, the iconic WWE Hall of Famer, shared a strip showcasing his villainous character paying off a referee.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan, the patriotic winner of the first-ever Royal Rumble match, posted a comic strip of himself ready for a fight, 2x4 in hand.
Jake “The Snake” Roberts, one of wrestling's most psychologically captivating characters, shared a strip featuring himself and his famous snake, Damien.
"Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff, a WWE Hall of Famer who famously battled Hulk Hogan, shared a strip where he's flexing his impressive physique.
Arn Anderson, the Enforcer of the Four Horsemen, posted a comic strip highlighting his no-nonsense, brawling style.
Pro wrestling photographer Pollyanna shared his personal collection of wrestling comics.
A Look Back at Wrestlers and Comics
The connection between wrestlers and comic books is nothing new. Back in 2017, WWE shared a video of their superstars discussing their love for comics.
Wrestling’s Comic Book History
The relationship between professional wrestling and comic books goes back decades. In the early 1990s, Marvel Comics and World Championship Wrestling (WCW) teamed up for a short-lived comic book series. The series featured many of WCW’s top stars at the time, including Sting, Lex Luger, and Ron Simmons. While the series only lasted for 12 issues, it was a cool crossover for fans of both worlds.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Chaos! Comics produced a series of comics based on WWF superstars like The Undertaker, Mankind, and Stone Cold Steve Austin. These comics were known for their dark and edgy tone, which was a perfect fit for the Attitude Era.
In 2018, Aubrey Sitterson and Chris Moreno released a great piece of wrestling history with The Comic Book Story of Professional Wrestling.
More recently, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has partnered with DC Comics for a series of crossover projects. This partnership has included variant covers for DC comics featuring AEW stars and an AEW Origins comic book that tells the stories of some of the company’s biggest names. It's great to see the tradition of wrestling and comics crossing over continuing with the current generation of stars.
