This event began in late 2009 with a one-shot (X-Necrosha #1) and then began in earnest in February with another one-shot (X-Necrosha: The Gathering), followed by multi-issue arcs across three of the X-books (New Mutants #6-8, X-Force #21-25 (and their Annual issue), and X-Men Legacy #231-233). The nice thing about it was that the series all could stand alone or be read together. The X-Men Legacy focused on the battle against the resurrected Proteus. New Mutants The not-as-nice things about were…It was light on plot and didn’t feel all that original.
Selene–the mutant vampire–teams up with Bastion. Bastion uses Eli Bard to help him eengineer the TO Virus (anyone else sick of that serving as a plot device?) to resurrect a bunch of dead X-Men enemies and other mutants. The undead characters all are aware they are dead. Some of them serve Selene and Bastion, others betray them.

They then invade Utopia, take it over, and rename it Necrosha.
Selene’s master plan is to harvest the souls of the resurrected and become a Goddess.
This is mainly an X-Force event, and that’s the team who close it out, getting close enough to Selene so that Warpath can stab her with a magic knife.
ScreenshotYes, I’ve painted with a broad brush here. The best parts of this event are the quieter moments and the reunions with dead characters.
Notably, Cipher stays alive after it’s all over because his buddy Warlock purges the TO Virus from his system.
ScreenshotIt’s not as clear what happens to all the other resurrected mutants after it’s over. I think they all go back to being dead, but it’s not explicit–at least as far as I could tell.
The aftermath:
- A quiet final moment between Destiny and Blindfold settle an ongoing mystery: Destiny was not Blindfold’s mother, but Destiny does reveal that Blindfold has a living brother.
- Wolfsbane’s pregnancy is revealed.
- X-Forces ranks are reduced to a much smaller team of Wolverine, Archangel, Vanisher and Domino.
- Selene, Onyxx, Meld and Diamond Lil are killed.
