Action Comics No. 1 Sells for Record 15 Million

Posted on January 10, 2026 by Neil Cole

A vintage copy of "Action Comics No. 1" has sold in a private transaction for $15 Million, establishing a new record for the most valuable comic book ever sold. The sale highlights the enduring cultural impact and investment-grade status of the character that launched the modern superhero genre.

The transaction was brokered by leading collectibles firm Metropolis Collectibles in partnership with ComicConnect. Graded CGC 9.0, the comic is considered to be in exceptionally high condition for a publication of its age, placing it among the finest known surviving copies. The identities of both the buyer and seller have not been disclosed.

"Action Comics No. 1" is universally regarded as the most important comic book in history, marking the debut of Superman and setting the template for generations of superheroes across comics, film, television, and popular culture. Fewer than 100 copies of the issue are believed to exist, with only a small number achieving high-grade certification.

The copy sold in this transaction also carries notable provenance, having previously belonged to actor Nicolas Cage before being stolen in 2000 and recovered more than a decade later. Its recovery and subsequent reappearance in the collectibles market have added to its historical significance and prestige.

This record-setting sale reinforces the status of rare comic books as premier cultural artifacts and underscores Superman's unparalleled legacy as one of the most influential fictional characters ever created.
