Dynamite Entertainment's Space Ghost is about to embark upon a whole new era.
Speaking to Games Radar, critically acclaimed Space Ghost scribe David Pepose discussed the breakout hit sci-fi series, all while giving fans some major insight into its upcoming second volume. "This is very much a season two," Pepose explained. "When I was first approached by Dynamite to write Space Ghost, our runway was for a year, and I managed to negotiate that to be 12 issues and an annual. But around, I'd say, around issue 10 with our Space Spectre issue, Dynamite asked me if I had any more stories I wanted to tell." Fans can catch a glimpse at covers for the upcoming fifth issue of the second volume of Space Ghost from artists Francesco Mattina and Michael Cho below and inked interior pages from the first issue.
"So us relaunching with our new number one, it very much is meant to really delineate a new storyline," Pepose continued. "As you saw in that annual, we threw a couple of grenades in the room by the end of it, both introducing Tempus, the Time Master, as sort of our new big bad of the series, but also introducing Dr. Henry Contra, who is Jan and Jason's maternal grandfather, and sort of this idea of if joining up with Space Ghost, if becoming sidekicks to a superhero, is this sort of escapist wish, escapist fantasy, what happens when the grown ups come to take you home and suddenly that fantasy goes away?"
Created by Hanna-Barbera Productions and designed by Alex Toth, Space Ghost first appeared on his own self-titled animated series on CBS back in 1966. Though the original series only ran for twenty episodes across a single season, the series found lasting popularity by helping to fill a very specific niche to fill in the wider realm of pop culture. The franchise received a massive resurgence in popularity courtesy of Cartoon Network's Space Ghost Coast to Coast, an animated satirical late-night talk show hosted by Space Ghost and featuring appearances from characters from his original series, including alien villains such as Brak, Zorak, Dr. Nightmare, and Moltar.
In 2024, Dynamite Entertainment rebooted Space Ghost in the form of a new comic book series written by Pepose and illustrated by Jonathan Lau. 2024's Space Ghost reimagined the classic series with a decidedly gritty edge, one that maintained its sense of grounded realism without ever letting go of the more fantastical or cartoonish aspects of previously established lore. Space Ghost proved to be a major success for Dynamite Entertainment, as evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive response it garnered from critics, staggering sales numbers, and the fact that Dynamite Entertainment asked Pepose back for a Volume 2 in and of itself.
