Alex Ross remains one of both DC and Marvel's most celebrated artists, and now he is set to return to the industry with a special new story arriving in September. Ross's Marvel Dimensions will give readers an exciting new look at the Marvel Universe.
Ross spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming 112-page graphic novel, which will be released by Abrams ComicArts in partnership with Marvel Comics on Sept. 1, 2026. "It’s meant to be as bonkers a ride for the reader as it could possibly be," Ross revealed. Story details are under wraps, but it's said to experiment in both art and form, and it will feature around 200 of Marvel's legendary characters.
Ross continued, "You're getting one kind of entertainment, and then it changes on you midstream, and then you're getting a different art style suddenly, and then you’re wondering, ‘Where’s this going?’ And then the format changes within the book itself, a mid-book format change. All these things hopefully seem to unify and combine and come back together, but it’s meant to be a wild ride that is throwing everything plus the kitchen sink at you."
Ross has been working on Marvel Dimensions for around 18 months, and he describes it as the culmination of different ideas he's had over the years, giving him the chance to tell the origins of Marvel characters, similar to how he did 25 years ago for DC. Marvel Dimensions reportedly opens with the origins of Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, Wolverine and many others.
"I knew I wanted to touch upon Marvel origins in some regard and had thought about that for years, and it never really sparked joy for me the same way as 25 years ago when I did it for DC," Ross revealed. "I would think like, ‘Oh, that’s just gonna be repetitive. You’ve done that kind of thing before. Why would it be new?’ And this is my way of coming up with a very twisted new way of approaching this."
Abrams Books' listing for the graphic novel shows that it will be released in a hardcover format for $29.99 with full-color illustrations throughout and a bonus insert comic. It also teases that readers will be kept guessing throughout the story, and that everything is not as it seems.
"A narrator describes each moment with confidence, guiding the reader through these touchstones of Marvel's history," the solicit reads. "But as the story moves forward, the tone begins to shift. The voice behind the narration is not who the readers expect and carries a motive that slowly pushes the narrative somewhere darker and far more unpredictable."
Alex Ross Hopes Comics Fans Will Give Marvel Dimensions a Shot

Over the years, he has developed a distinct style that's made him known for his cover art for both Marvel and DC. With the upcoming release of Marvel Dimensions, Ross hopes that his prior experience will inspire readers to check out his newest project.
"Kingdom Come and Marvels are clearly what my reputation is based on, and their continued appeal must have something to do with relatability," Ross explained. "They both feature a grounded human view perspective of fantastic elements, and the realism aspect is still effective in the era of films that bring so much of the same material to life. That's my best guess, and I'm lucky that if people still respond to that work from my mid-20s, that they will give the new projects I do a shot."
Marvel Dimensions will be released on Sept. 1, 2026.
