Avengers: The Initiative #28-30 (2009)

Time for another story that’s exhausting to tag (because there’s over 50 characters appearing), and exhausting to read, too (because it focuses on Night Thrasher).

Big picture: More and more Initiative teams are fed up with Osborn and quit, forming an underground Avengers Resistance, or are kicked out.  The Resistance group form a sort of underground railroad to smuggle heroes into Canada and also team up with the Mighty Avengers.

Meanwhile, Osborn recruits new people to his own initiative like Penance and Hardball, and also tries to clone Dwayne Taylor, the original Night Thrasher.

There’s also a nice story showing Trauma trying to help Penance deal with the fact that he was partly responsible for the death of so many people in the Stamford explosion that instigated the Civil War.  Nightmare gets involved, capitalizing on the character’s past traumas as they sleep.

The Nightmare story is the other main one here (the first being about Night Thrasher), but there’s so much going on.  In addition, there are a half-dozen sub-stories and asides.  I’m not going to talk about any of them.  They’re all actually pretty good in terms of readability, but the characters are unimportant and the stories don’t change anything.  Again, I’m not saying this is a bad comic–it most definitely is not.  It’s just a hard one to write about for this site.
